Tracking Software Updates and Maintence 1

Submitted by antgiant
antgiant writes "I work at a mid size company with the usual large and growing collection of server side software. I have recently been tasked with ensuring that everything is up to date and stays that way. I was wondering how does the Slashdot community track that? Paper? Calander app? Software package? In an ideal world I'd love an easy way to determine last update time for any piece of software, notifications for upcoming updates, and alerts for software that hasn't been updated in a while. What do you recommend?"

Anybody else find their videos damaged on YouTube?->

Submitted by robotsrule
robotsrule writes "A user comment on one of my more popular videos remarked that it was "lame" because it was only 3 seconds long. It's supposed to be several minutes long and indeed it was up until about 2 months ago, judging by the user comment history. But now the video length reported by YouTube in the playback bar is only 3 seconds and when you play it, that's exactly how many seconds of video that plays so it's not just a video length reporting issue. If you have any YouTube videos, especially if you are a YouTube partner and derive income from your videos, you may want to inspect them for similar damage. I don't know if this happened during a YouTube restore operation or the like and I've posted a bug report on their forums. Unfortunately the video of mine that got truncated is heavily linked to by several big tech sites so I'm hoping YouTube has a fix for this, and for others like myself. If you have had the same thing happen, please report it in a SlashDot comment to this post and indicate about when it appears to have happened."

Blackberry encrypted backups cracked

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "Elcomsoft http://www.elcomsoft.com/eppb.html has released a Blackberry/iPhone cracking tool to easily break into Blackberry backup files even with AES256 encryption in a relatively short time. Due to a weakness in the way the backup software generates the encryption keys, very little brute-force is required to recover the key and read the full contents of the device including email, contacts, browser history, etc. Blog post with detailed description of the attack: http://blog.crackpassword.com/2010/09/smartphone-forensics-cracking-blackberry-backup-passwords/"

Levitating graphene is fastest-spinning object->

Submitted by techbeat
techbeat writes "A flake of exotic carbon a few atoms thick has claimed a record: the speck has been spun faster than any other object, at a clip of 60 million rotations per minute. Previously, micrometre-sized crystals have been spun at up to 30,000 rpm using an optical trap. It is thanks to graphene's amazing strength that the flakes are not pulled apart by the much higher spinning rate, says Bruce Kane at the University of Maryland in College Park. Spinning could be a way to probe the properties of graphene, or manipulate it in new ways."

There is no Plan B: the ugly transition to IPv6->

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "The Internet is running out of IPv4 addresses--not at some point in the future, but right now. But the only solution to the problem, IPv6, is just now really starting to be deployed. That's why we're all in for some tough times ahead."

Torrent Only Movies Denied IMDB Listing->

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "A film set to be released for free via BitTorrent has been denied a listing in the Internet Movie Database. The Tunnel is currently in production and despite pleas from the makers, IMDb won’t allow it on their site. The creators of this horror movie believe that because they have shunned an official distributor and chosen a BitTorrent model instead, this has put them at a disadvantage with the Amazon-owned site."

Screen Sharing for the Home Theater

Submitted by antgiant
antgiant writes "Like many of us I frequently watch video on various websites from my laptop. Sometimes those videos are worth sharing on my home theater setup. Doing this requires some painful contortions with the computer I have set up as a DVR and playing it there. But why do I have to do that? I have a great wireless setup. I can easily remote control the DVR computer and send its audio and video to my laptop. Why can't I do the reverse? In specific I am looking for something that allows me to "throw" my laptop screen and audio to my DVR over my wireless network. I don't mind adding hardware to my DVR or home theater setup. However, I want software only for the laptop. Ideally something that would be cross platform and easy enough to install and use that non-techy friends and family could install it and send their video to the tv. It seems like this should be reasonably easy, but I have been unable to find anything to do this. The recent Wi-Di story gave me hope, however it appears to be limited to Intel computers. And, yes I have considered running wires, for a number of reasons that just doesn't work in my house. Plus my wireless has plenty of extra capacity why do I need wires?"
