Open-Source Nazis

Here is one reason I don't like OSS Nazis.

When they steal RIAA music and are accused of theft, they retort, "I didn't STEAL it, I just COPIED it. The owner still has their copy and I wouldn't have bought it anyway."

But when someone infringes on the GPL, they scream, "They STOLE our code!"

Can't have it both ways boys.

  • You're comparing apples and oranges, my friend.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all about copyright as it was originally intended - which was not theft; only as of the DMCA has copyright infringement been a crime. Until Disney and Microsoft, et al, copyright infringement was a civil tort, not a criminal action. And, outside of the electronic world, it STILL IS.

Regardless, not all "OSS Nazis" infringe copyrights on music - in fact, I would say far more Free Software advocates I know avoid copyright infringement th

      • I don't care about civil torts. I don't care about anyone can use GPL software. I don't care that "copyright owners originally fought libraries" (don't like being painted with the broad brush but sure like to use it yourself, don't you). The bottom line is that Illegally Downloading Music Is Wrong and anyone who does that while simultaneously berating Linksys or whoever over a GPL violation is a flaming hypocrite.

Ah... "I know the Truth(tm), so don't confuse me with facts."... It's far to simplistic to pa

        • Revolution, revolution! When _____ happens, everything will be changed! Any day now! I'm sorry to break it to you but you still won't be able to get all the major label music you want for free without doing it illegally. I've been reading this shit site since it started and I've heard too much "Linux will dominate by 1999, MS will be out of business by 2001, just wait, you will see" to be anything but skeptical of these types of grand predictions. Copyright law was strengthened because businesses lobbied fo
          • And by the way. If you'll go back to my original anti-hypocrite post and trace from there - nowhere will you find that I am an RIAA sycophant. The RIAA may well be fairly lousy, it's just that when a small group of largely adolescent and twenty-something middle-class computer-using music-thieving males erupts in outcry and calls it the Great Satan over its every move, I can guess that it's probably not the Great Satan.

Ok, you got me there, you're right, and I'm sorry if I mistook you for one! (serious, no
