Disney does not sell access to ABC and does not get subscriber fees for it either. Broadcast stations are split up into local affiliates. These are generally owned by companies like Sinclair. Sinclair might chose to require subscription fees instead of listing as a "must carry", but this is completely up to the affiliate and not the broadcast network like ABC.

A better explanation would be subscribing to ESPN without being required to buy ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN News, ESPN Classic, etc.

The U.S. needs a massive push for universal preschool, which is highly labor-intensive and expensive, but pays tremendous social dividends.

Don't tell me we can't afford it. This sort of investment in our national human capital will reap enormous benefits for the society and the economy.

Citation needed.

The state of Iowa has offered free preschool the last few years. The cost of running these preschools has more than doubled during these years. I just love that government efficiency!

Also, I live in a blue collar town of about 26,000 with about 35-40% of the town receiving government assistance. Previous to the new state policy we had 96% of 4 year old kids attending preschool. Now with the "free" preschool option we still have 96% attending preschool.

How's all this "hope and change" bullshit working for you Obama supporters? He was supposed to close Gitmo within a year of taking office. He promised. I guess he's not a different kind of politician after all.

Now he has expanded his war on terror, crossing boarders, using more drones, signing terrible NDAA's, etc. How is this any different from Bush, other than the fact that the US media refuses to report on it? The media no longer notifies of us soldier or innocent civilian deaths. How convenient.

But wait - look over here!!! The White House is no longer giving tours because teh evil Repubers won't let us spend any money!!!

When I worked at Comcast we used to strong arm all the locals by simply not carrying them if they demanded any money. we would just replace their channel with a black screen that says "WZPX is trying to extort money out of you and raise your cable bill. Call them at 888-888-8888 and tell them how you feel"

It was usually about 3 days and the station would call back and say they were ok with us carrying them for free.

What you are describing is "must-carry" status. If a station labels themselves as "must-carry" then they cannot demand compensation from the cable or satellite provider. However, many of these stations are changing from must-carry status to retransmission consent status where they can charge for their content. Since many of the commercial must-carry stations are usually affiliates of nation-wide broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, etc) they have realized that they can make more money by charging fees for their content instead of advertising being their only source of revenue. We are seeing more and more of this with media groups like Sinclair changing their stations' status from must-carry to retransmission consent. Consumers don't like their bills going up, but they also don't want to lose the local news/weather and national programming.

Are generally found to be distortion and a roll off of high frequencies when one bothers to take apart the actual music reproduction.

Some people have become accustomed to these artifacts and so prefer them.

The only real antidote is to go to live music performances to hear what they really sound like.

I'd recommend that for people used to modern pop recordings too. I think many would be shocked to hear what they are missing in the horribly compressed and otherwise doctored up recordings that are sold today.

While I generally agree with your statement, many of the modern live pop bands do the same thing live that they do on recordings. It's a shame that the live performances are just as doctored as the recordings are.

Why not? Just because they *appear* to be complying with a contract does not mean that they are following a contract. Maybe they aren't interested in physical combat and instead start attacking vital systems of South Korea, US, etc. Wouldn't that be the same thing?

This is just plain retarded. Why have "agile releases" of corporate software? We can barely afford to upgrade server OS and applications every 5-10 years including all of the time/labor for the upgrades! Now they are going to release Server OS, Exchange, etc every 12-18 months? I call bullshit.

Hell, Microsoft can't even have their flagship Exchange 2010 product run on Server 2012 yet....and that is 6+ months after Server 2012 was released. Now I'm supposed to believe that Microsoft will have interoperability between 5-10 server releases with 5-10 different flavors of Exchange, SQL, etc?

I can't even imagine trying to manage that mess - it's difficult enough now.
