This is, in part, because municipal annexation is difficult in Massachusetts. If you compare the "urban" (4.18 million) and "metro" (4.59 million) populations, you'll see that it's comparable to other large cities with a larger city proper. For instance, Berlin's Metro area is 4.5 million. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin/Brandenburg_Metropolitan_Region http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston Maybe not competitive with the top 50 cities, but easily comparable to the top 100 in the world.

United States Begins Flying Stealth Bombers Over South Korea 567

skade88 writes "The New York Times is reporting that the United States has started flying B-2 stealth bomber runs over South Korea as a show of force to North Korea. The bombers flew 6,500 miles to bomb a South Korean island with mock explosives. Earlier this month the U.S. Military ran mock B-52 bombing runs over the same South Korean island. The U.S. military says it shows that it can execute precision bombing runs at will with little notice needed. The U.S. also reaffirmed their commitment to protecting its allies in the region. The North Koreans have been making threats to turn South Korea into a sea of fire. North Korea has also made threats claiming they will nuke the United States' mainland."

NASCAR Tries To Squelch Video of Spectators Injured By Crash 359

An anonymous reader writes "Dozens of fans attending a NASCAR race at Daytona Speedway were injured when a crash during the last lap triggered a chain reaction, culminating in the front section of Kyle Larson's car ricocheting into the fence in front of the stands (Larson escaped injury). While the footage accompanying the article is dramatic enough, an even more riveting clip showing the chaotic scene in the stands from up close was posted on YouTube, but was taken down after NASCAR claimed it violated their copyright . YouTube has since restored the fan's video. A NASCAR spokesman has issued a clarification, saying that the takedown request was done out of respect for those injured. The race was an opening act for the main event, the Daytona 500, which officials say will proceed as scheduled. 'With the fence being prepared tonight to our safety protocols, we expect to go racing tomorrow with no changes,' Speedway President Joie Chitwood told CNN."

While this may stop aging (assuming it works in this scenario), it won't stop things like car accidents and murders, and probably won't stop things like heart failures, strokes, cancer, starvation, and obesity related deaths. Obviously there will still be a large number of people who would have died of old age who will no longer die, and this will change how a lot of things work (like social security, pensions, and such), but it probably won't cause an explosion in the population, just a higher proportion of tragic deaths.

It could do very interesting things with the way people live though. If a bunch of people retire at 60 with stable investments and a youthful body, they could do all sorts of things for the next hundred years or so.

Ant writes "Popular Mechanics mailed a bunch of sensors on an epic journey to find out which American shipping company is the most careful with your packages. From the article: 'One disheartening result was that our package received more abuse when marked "Fragile" or "This Side Up." The carriers flipped the package more, and it registered above-average acceleration spikes during trips for which we requested careful treatment.' Here's what they found."

Yeah, and some DVD stores have different categories between drama VS fantasy VS sci-fi. Is 4chan porn? Is images.google.com porn? Why not a violence domain?

The solution is to let people do what they want. This is not a real problem. The only problem is with people who want the government to get involved in this.

Facebook Messaging Blocks Links 143

jhigh writes "With the launch of the new Facebook messaging system designed to encourage account holders to utilize Facebook for all of their messaging needs, one would think that Facebook would recognize that it cannot continue to block content that it disagrees with. However, Wired reports that Facebook messaging, like the rest of the social networking application, continues to block links to torrents and other file sharing sites, even when users are sending messages via their facebook.com email address. Say what you want about the morality of using file sharing services to share copyrighted material, if Facebook wishes to become a player in the email market, they cannot block content."

Well, O.K. I'll compromise with my principles because of EXISTENTIAL DESPAIR!
