Get the facts about sagging Linux server sales

Submitted by
Joe Barr
Joe Barr writes "A recent story by eWeek's Peter Galli interpreted data from IDC's Quarterly Server Tracking report and concluded that Linux server sales have run into a stone wall. Other Windows pundits jumped on this misconception and adorned with inane commentary about "low hanging fruit." On Linux.com, I've refuted the meme that Linux is losing to Windows based on a simple analysis of facts: revenues from Red Hat, Novell, and Windows over the past six quarters. Now even IDC is saying that Galli "hacked" the article pretty badly. The Tres Duh Press strikes again."

Alien Arena 6.10 game review->

Submitted by
Joe Barr
Joe Barr writes "I wrote last year that "Tremulous is the best free software FPS game I've had the pleasure of playing." Alien Arena has changed my mind about that. They're both great, and both stand on the shoulders of the free software Quake engine, but Alien Arena is now at the top of my list."

Linux to get the boot at Army Corps of Engineers?->

Submitted by
Joe Barr
Joe Barr writes "Linux.com is reporting that according to an anonymous source working at the Geotechnical & Structures Lab of the US Army Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg, Miss., a committee of government employees and contractors at Vicksburg is considering a new IT policy which will force everyone to move to Windows XP if they are not already running it, and to port all applications save one currently running on Linux to Windows. The lone exception would be moved to Solaris."

What killed Paterva Evolution?->

Submitted by
Joe Barr
Joe Barr writes "Not long after Paterva Evolution was reviewed on Linux.com, Roelof Temmingh removed the binaries from the Paterva.com website and announced they were no longer available. Roelof made an announcement over the weekend which provides hints about who was responsible for its demise. Was it Google, or Novell, or an unspecified social network which killed the project? He's not saying for sure, but he did announce that the data mining application will survive, albeit with changes to data sources and a new name."

Evolution: for kick-ass datamining at your desktop->

Submitted by
Joe Barr
Joe Barr writes "H. D. Moore raved about Paterva Evolution in his talk at Black Hat/Defcon recently, so I checked it out. He was right. This cross-platform Java app is only in its second beta, but it is extremely powerful already, and designed for the easy addition of new transforms (type of mining). One example is the inclusion of WikiEdit in the latest beta. My review is live here on Linux.com."

Tinker, Tailor, Oh my, is that Priest I spy?

Submitted by
Joe Barr
Joe Barr writes "Linux.com's report on Defcon XV contains an unconfirmed report that Priest, one of Defcon's best known goons — aka con staff — can be seen a natural on page 6 of the Defcon guide. This and more on happenings at the show, including rumblings of discontent with the computer security industry, can be found here."

Eben Moglen says Tim O'Reilly is 'frivolous'

Submitted by lisah
lisah writes "When Eben Moglen took the stage at OSCON today, things heated up rather quickly. According to reports, 'At the O'Reilly Open Source Convention, Eben Moglen threw down the gauntlet to O'Reilly founder and CEO Tim O'Reilly. Saying that O'Reilly had spent ten years making money and building the O'Reilly name, Moglen invited O'Reilly to stop being "frivolous" and to join the conversation about software freedom.'"
