you do know that to make a claim, you need to prove it with somehing more than a pompously stated opinion, right?

BTW: Pigs would make great test subjects given how similar their internal systems are to us.... hmmm, kinda scary how similar we are internally to our own breakfast.

The only one here who is actually whining is you. So what if you think we're entitled? Sorry, but if we want to be able to REASONABLY use our computer software, our PURCHASES, we have to stand up at some point and say "WE don't like X," or "we really think Y would be better if they did Z instead" - don't like that? Not my fuckin' problem. Point is, DRM is getting more ridiculous every year, and the justifications for it being so absurd even more so - and NATURALLY, we will reach a point where there is a backlash beause people don't like having their purchases controled THAT MUCH. I'm not gonna call you anything, so don't you dare call me entitled for believing I should have reaonable freedoms to use my purchase, you pompous fuck.

No, just no. It doesn't matter if we choose to buy it or not, some actions are just so un-natural that it can't be tolerated, especially WITH the risk of such behavior becoming acceptible and more widespread. pulll your head out of your ass. We have the right to be able to use, keep the disk of software, or whatever form it is, of softare, PERIOD.

In this case, I think that all the airport security is for the general public's peace of mind.

Well, last time I checked, there is no right to FEEL safe, especially at the expense of our rights, health, or well being. A reasonable right to expect to be safe yes, but not a right to merely feel safe.

McGruber writes "The big buzz for travelers today is the story of how a scary toothbrush prompted the closure of Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport: 'Airport officials told Channel 2 Action News that an electric toothbrush began vibrating inside a bag checked onto an AirTran flight, causing workers to alert airport officials to the strange noise.' The terminal and the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) subway were both temporary closed 'out of an abundance of caution.' ATL has been the world's busiest airport by passenger traffic since 1998, and by number of landings and take-offs since 2005."

Connecticut Group Wants Your Violent Videogames — To Destroy Them 449

DavidGilbert99 writes with this excerpt from IB Times: "The Sandy Hook shooting once again raised the debate about how much power violent videogames wield over teenagers. Following proclamations from the National Rifle Association and the establishment of a study by the National Academy of Sciences to investigate the psychological effects of violent games on children, a group in Connecticut is now having its say Southington, a town 30 miles from where the shooting took place, is offering gift tokens in exchange for violent videogames, as well as other violent media such as DVDs or videos. The group, called SouthingtonSOS, said in a statement: 'There is ample evidence that violent video games, along with violent media of all kinds, including TV and movies portraying story after story showing a continuous stream of violence and killing, has contributed to increasing aggressiveness, fear, anxiety and is desensitizing our children to acts of violence including bullying.'" And Yes, they plan to destroy the traded-in games. (Note: Beware the obnoxious auto-playing video ad with sound; adjust volume accordingly.)

Are you saying that I as a professional composer should let companies use my older music for free in commercial contexts, to benefit society?

Well, depending on HOW OLD that work is, that answer varies from no, to maybe, to a definitive YES - something that was very much true of copyright laws back when the term was considerably shorter.

Ticking Arctic Carbon Bomb May Be Bigger Than Expected 339

from the who-invented-carbon-bombs-anyway dept.
sciencehabit writes "Scientists are expressing fresh concerns about the carbon locked in the Arctic's vast expanse of frozen soil. New field studies quantify the amount of soil carbon at 1.9 trillion metric tons, suggesting that previous estimates underestimated the climate risk if this carbon is liberated. Meanwhile, a new analysis of laboratory experiments that simulate carbon release by thawed soil is bolstering worries that continued carbon emissions could unleash a massive Arctic carbon wallop."
