Ten Reasons Why You Should Boycott Skype->

Submitted by Tovok7
Tovok7 writes "Despite its wide usage and popularity, there has always been a lot of criticism about eBay's unprofitable Skype. Now all the arguments against using Skype were summarized and several alternatives proposed. Should you ever need to explain your friends why you are not going to use Skype, this article might come in handy: "If you want to understand what Skype actually is, it might help to picture an almighty telephone and mail company. This company can not only spy on your private conversations and has total control over them, but it also forces you to use it. It owns the telephone lines and all mail transportation and does not let other companies use them. At the same time, you are bound to only use their telephone and mailboxes." Is the average user going to be impressed by these arguments and are there really good alternatives to Skype?"

FSFE launches Free PDF Readers campaign

Submitted by
FSFE Fellow
FSFE Fellow writes "The Fellowship of the Free Software Foundation Europe is proud to announce its latest initiative: pdfreaders.org, a site providing information about PDF with links to Free Software PDF readers for all major operating systems.

"Interoperability, competition and choice are primary benefits of Open Standards that translate into vendor-independence and better value for money for customers," says FSFE president Georg Greve. "Although many versions of PDF offer all these benefits for formatted text and documents, files in PDF formats typically come with information that users need to use a specific product. pdfreaders.org provides an alternative to highlight the strengths of PDF as an Open Standard.""

One of the best ways is to make joining the successful Fellowship programme your New Year's resolution! More reasons to join: supporting the Freedom Task Force, FSFE anti-software patent work, and political lobbying."

New platform for funding open-source development->

Submitted by
jackflap
jackflap writes "A new website that could turn into an exciting community-driven platform for open-source software development has sprung up recently. By bidding any amount they want on open-source projects, community members can use their wallets to vote and fund projects they would like to see realized.

From the website — Cofundos helps to realize bright ideas by providing a platform for their discussion and enrichment and by establishing a process for organizing the contributions and interests of different stakeholders in the ideas."

Open-source innovation platform Cofundos.org-> 1

Submitted by
Soeren Auer
Soeren Auer writes "Cofundos.org is a novel platform for spurring innovation and development of open-source software. It is about revealing bright ideas regarding the development of open-source software and attracting a critical mass for their realization. The platform as well as further information can be found at:

http://www.cofundos.org/

The main idea of Cofundos.org is to share innovative (open-source) ideas, to refine them and to mobilize funding for their realization.
We would like to invite all Slashdot readers to register or login using OpenId and to post software ideas, requirements or even bid for the
realization of existing projects. Cofundus.org is entirely semantically interoperable (complete RDF dumps of all nonsensitive data, Atom and JSON exports) and truly open-knowledge."
