This morning's Indianapolis Star profiles a local programmer who is raising funds to put Tux on a race car for the Indianapolis 500, which runs in later this month. His website has already raised over $11,000 for the cause, which hopes to promote Linux during one of the world's most-watched sporting events. If he can raise $350,000, a primary sponsorship would be available, which would mean a larger logo featured on the side of the car.

  • that's a lot of money. maybe i'm short sighted or not thinking 'outside the box' or whatever - but i'd rather see that kind of money going to open source projects. i don't know how many people watch the race any more - but even if it were a lot of people - i don't think having the penguin on a car will have any impact on their operating system choices.
  • While there are about 100,000+ people at the track the Indy 500 is a black hole of TV Viewership!

This guy ought to put his Penguin on the side of NASCAR car if he wants someone to see it.
    • Actually, the crowd at the track is closer to 300,000 than 100,000. You're right, TV viewership has dropped off since decades past, but I believe it's on the rebound. Heck, with three women in the field this year, maybe they'll get Oprah to sponsor a car and draw in the soccer mom demographic...
