  Web-based Photoshop Express launched, free[->] 2008-03-27 11:32 TheSHAD0W

Submitted by TheSHAD0W on Thursday March 27, @11:32AM
TheSHAD0W writes "I've been scanning Slashdot for years, and I get this story in my local paper first??

From the article: "The maker of the popular photo-editing software Photoshop on Thursday launched a basic version available for free online. San Jose, Calif.-based Adobe Systems Inc. says it hopes to boost its name recognition among a new generation of consumers who edit, store and share photos online. While Photoshop is designed for trained professionals, Adobe says Photoshop Express, which it launched in a "beta" test version, is easier to learn. User comments will be taken into account for future upgrades."

microsoft and yahoo.....BAD news??? 2008-03-18 12:46 His Divine Javabean

Submitted by His Divine Javabean on Tuesday March 18, @12:46PM
His Divine Javabean writes "Microsoft could "takeover" Yahoo! how could this be bad?? Microsoft and Yahoo! even together are no match for Google's stake on the internets search or "personal website affilate programs" but here's a question "!How is At&t and Yahoo! connected??" Yahoo! is premeired on At&t's DSL service ie."At&t Yahoo! high speed dsl" with a statement like that does At&t own Yahoo!??? if it does will microsoft be getting just the "Yahoo! branch"?? does that mean it will now be the "At&t Microsoft High speed dsl"?? also another point.....didn't yahoo open their instant messengers network to let third party programs use their network??? ie didn't they open their network's info so "pidgin(like) apps don't have to crack their way in"???? if that's the case if microsoft wins....... {pidgin(like)} programmers could be sued/arrested on 2 different counts of reverse-engineering/hacking both msn and yahoo!'s networks all microsoft would have to do is go thro and "takeover" yahoo! and close both networks to outsiders for less than a year....just long enough for {pidgin(like)} apps to go thro and get their software to work on those networks.... i am certain that microsoft would do this....after all yahoo! atleast went thro and made a *unix(s) version of their app not microsoft..... if they sued/arrested {pidgin(like)} developers/programmers then what if they are *unix(s) programmers/developers?!?!? could (in this senerio) this be a "hail-mary pass" attempt to go around all the anti-trust/anti-monopoly workings of the world to put a serious dent into *unix(s) developement?? the thing that caught me onto this theory was installing ubuntu 7.10 onto a "client's" computer and realizing that pidgin was part of its "default" installation (i only ever use installation dvd's for all linuxes i install) could they smack around linux "companies" by sueing for copyright/"patent infringement" other "companies" like pidgen (which is part of ubuntu 7.10's "default" installation)? i can't remember who it was but someone said where i could "hear" that linux's like ubuntu were only a contender in the os field for causual users "grandma and grampa types or other "non-hardcore-gaming"-types" if using stuff like pidgen becomes illegal or stuff like pidgin is "put out of business" then that means those same ppl could say that now all u can really do is surf the net (until microsoft finds someway to attack mozilla, opera, etc...) then won't Vista look better.......... think about it..... if they could attack things like pidgin and get them "destroyed" than microsoft would "look better" cause now u can't use the most popular im systems in linux(it would be "illegal") add to that the fact that linux "companies/developers" would be fighting lawsuits against microsoft for "encouraging illegal im suites".....that is the companies/developers not already in prison for copyright/patent infrigement or hacking..........this whole affair of microsoft needing yahoo has left the smell of "bovine-fecal-matter" in my nose since i first read it here last month...... i can't think of anyone i trust "the words coming out of" LESS than bill gates...am i only proving my psyciotrist right in being "completely crazy" or is there hope for me...in the terms that this actually makes sense as a possible motive for microsoft to "takeover" Yahoo!!?????"

new stock spam in the air 2007-08-20 21:34 TheSHAD0W

Submitted by TheSHAD0W on Monday August 20 2007, @09:34PM
TheSHAD0W writes "There's a new, insidious stock-touting spam being spread all over the internet. All the spam messages contain is a link to the Yahoo Finance page for the stock involved. (The exact link has been omitted to prevent the stock from being touted further.)

I wonder if whomever is sending these messages can even be prosecuted? After all, they aren't making any claims about the stock, merely directing people to a general news source..."

  Good-natured (?) spam 2007-07-11 18:13 TheSHAD0W

Submitted by TheSHAD0W on Wednesday July 11 2007, @06:13PM
TheSHAD0W writes "Ever since I once used Panda Software's Activescan antivirus, they've been spamming me with advertising. I finally got fed up with it and followed a link to an unsubscribe page, but when given a confirmation link to follow in a follow-up email, I was told "We are sorry that we are unable to process your request at the moment". An email to their customer service address bounced. What else should I do to stop their spam? Has anyone else had trouble getting an otherwise legitimate company to stop sending repetitive advertising?"

TheSHAD0W writes "A friend of mine was working as a consultant for a power company in Michigan. Awakened early this morning on an emergency call, unable to log on remotely to fix their emergency response software, he asked whether he needed to "smack one of those guys in the head at network security". He was fired for that remark."

Which Handheld Is Best? 2007-03-25 14:40 ddillman

Submitted by ddillman on Sunday March 25 2007, @02:40PM
ddillman writes "Dear Slashdot:

I find myself once again looking to buy a new PDA. I've owned several Palm devices ranging from low-end to high-end over the years, had an employer supply a Handspring Visor, had a friend with a Sony Clie (PalmOS), and another with a Dell Axim (WinCE). I note that Palm has little faith in the reliability of their own low-end devices with just a 90-day warranty, and a 1-year warranty on their upper crust products. The longest span I've got from a Palm is just over 1 year, and I try to treat my gadgets pretty well, so I'm not particularly pleased by Palm's reliability.

A PDA running Linux would be cool for the geek factor, but is not required. I'm most familiar with PalmOS in a PDA, but it's not required. I'd prefer to avoid Windows based on desktop Windows experience, but if there's a compelling reason to use it on a PDA I won't rule it out. One thing I'm NOT looking for is a cellphone, so no phone-based PDA's need apply. Reliability is key, if you hadn't already guessed. I'd like Wifi and perhaps Bluetooth, though bluetooth isn't required, and decent battery life is a plus. And, I'm not rich, so I'd prefer to keep the price down where a mere mortal can afford it.

With all of that said, what's the best way to go in a new PDA these days?"
