+ - OSX Lion ships with faulty NVidia Drivers->

Submitted by TeaCurran
TeaCurran (575365) writes "Apple OSX Lion shipped with new NVidia video drivers that are causing anyone with a mid 2010 Macbook Pro to get a kernel panic every 5-10 minutes. Apple knew about the issue before shipping lion, hasn't responded to the issue, and is censoring posts in their support forum that mention words like 'boycot' and 'petition'. NVidia has responded that the drivers are the responsibility of Apple so they won't deal with the issue. How a major hardware manufacturer can ship such a faulty product without getting much press about it is completely beyond me."

+ - 10 things Flash can do today that HTML5 can’-> 1

Submitted by TeaCurran
TeaCurran (575365) writes "In face of all the hype, fear, confusion related to HTML5 vs Flash I wanted to come up with a reasoned list of why I think flash is still the right choice for building many types of web applications. This is a list of things I could think of and find that highlight some areas where Flash has innovated ahead of where the HTML5 specs and implementations are at currently."

+ - Monty is creating FUD that hurts the OSS community->

Submitted by TeaCurran
TeaCurran (575365) writes "I keep seeing a ton of press from blog posts that Monty Widenius is writing about how the Oracle-Sun merger is bad for the MySQL community. In this article, I talk about the other side of the story and argue that Widenius is using FUD to leverage the community for his own gain, while at the same time doing damage to MySQL and other OSS projects Sun maintains."

Comment: G1 is already in OpenJDK (Score 5, Informative) 587

by TeaCurran (#28142509) Attached to: Java Gets New Garbage Collector, But Only If You Buy Support
G1 is in the latest OpenJDK builds. Since it is GPL you are free to use it without any license restrictions.

The note in the release notes is only saying that Sun won't officially support it in their releases without a support contract.

If you are concerned, use OpenJDK.

+ - How Lala Works and the Legal Bomb Lurking

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "This week Lala launched a new locker service. Michael Robertson, founder of MP3.com and inventor of previous 'instant loading' locker system Beam-It took a look at how Lala's technology works and the possible legal perils confronting them. (They are bypassing the upload step sometimes.) Fascinating reading and something lawyers and online music companies will be following closely."

+ - Ex-Aerospace Engineer Wins NASA Glove Contest

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "An unemployed former aerospace engineer has built a better spacesuit glove, claiming the first payoff in the NASA-backed Centennial Challenges competition. Peter Homer clinched a $200,000 prize in this week's Astronaut Glove Competition with a spacesuit glove that proved more comfortable, durable and flexible than gloves currently used by spacewalking astronauts. "When I started, I didn't know anything about making a glove," Homer said. "It was a great learning experience along the way.""

+ - Hurricane Forecasts Were Dust-Busted

Submitted by
SeaDour
SeaDour writes "A NASA study is claiming that one of the major reasons last year's hurricane season was so tame compared to the initial forecasts may have been due to increased dust storm activity in Africa's Sahara Desert. The dust particles drifted over the Atlantic, blocking sunlight to the water below which allowed it to cool significantly. "Dust concentrations may play as big a role as other atmospheric conditions, like El Nino, and offer some predictive value, so they should be closely monitored to improve hurricane forecasts," said lead author William Lau."

ESA wants to send you to Mars*->

*A simulation of Mars, anyway

The European Space Agency (ESA) is recruiting volunteers for a simulated trip to Mars. Wannabe astronauts will have to be made of sturdy stuff: the mission will involve being locked, with five other people, in a metal tank somewhere in Moscow for 500 days.

+ - ATI Catalyst 7.3, BSOD on Vista

Submitted by The Great Danton
The Great Danton (666) writes "Recently, Tech ARP wrote about how the ATI Radeon X1950 GT graphics card had managed to obtain Vista certification without a working driver. The first working driver for the Radeon X1950 GT finally appeared on March 28, 2007, the Catalyst 7.3. Should X1950 GT owners jump for joy? Not quite yet as ATI didn't do a pretty good job with this driver set either. This article will show you how wrong it would go if you decided to install it on your Vista system. A nightmare would be an understatement."

+ - No Foolin': Morfik Patents AJAX Compiler

Submitted by MikeyTheK
MikeyTheK (873329) writes "Sorry for the title, the subject can only take so many characters. No April Fools joke here. It appears that under the radar, the USPTO granted Morfik a patent for the "System and method for synthesizing object-oriented high-level code into browser-side javascript". Reading further, it appears that they have patented the compiling of high-level languages into AJAX apps. The high-level languages include "Ada, C, C++, C#, COBOL, ColdFusion, Common Lisp, Delphi, Fortran, Java, Object Pascal, SmallTalk, Visual Basic, and Visual Basic.NET".

It would appear that the application date is September, 2005."
