Here we go!!
I carved out some room in the chaos, and had a friend help me set up DapperDrake - Ubuntu with Gnome.
We did pretty well to start with; my killer apps are XMMS (X(CrossPlatform) MultiMedia system) and FireFox.
I managed to figure out where my desktop is, and wandered around the Add/Remove package wizard.
The only scary moment was when I clicked "remove main window" for XMMS. Uninstall/ReInstall didn't fix it!
I calmed down, and figured there had to be a PowerUser way to get it back. I eventually dug up Konsole shell.
XMMS -m restores the main menu! From there, I woke up, fixed the settings as desired, and added the Fyre skin. Now I shouldn't have to go back in there to fiddle.
As I understand it, Gnome is a sanitized desktop. I had to think a little to figure out how to delete stuff off of it; a bunch of stuff had no write permissions.
I'll very slowly add shell commands to my repetoire. Pure shell would drive me crazy, and I would have been cooked with pure Gnome. As a pair, they work best - together.
