+ - Whatever happened to Sanford "Spamford" Wallace?->

Submitted by Tackhead
Tackhead (54550) writes "People of a certain age — the age before email filters were effective, may remember a few mid-90s buzzwords like "bulletproof hosting" and "double opt-in." People may remember that Hormel itself conceded that although "SPAM" referred to their potted meat product, the term "spam" could refer to unsolicited commercial email. People may also remember AGIS, Cyberpromo, Sanford "Spam King" Wallace and Walt Rines. Ten years after a 2003 retrospective on Rines and Wallace, Ars Technica reminds us that the more things change, the more they stay the same."

+ - Sony's PS4 to have less stringent DRM than Microsoft's Xbox One->

Submitted by Tackhead
Tackhead (54550) writes "E3 is turning into Bizarro World this year. Sony has not only promised that that the PS4 will support used games without an online connection, they trolled the Xbox folks hard with this Official PlayStation Used Game Instructional Video. Compounding the silliness, and hot on the heels of the political firestorm surrounding Donglegate, Microsoft went for rape jokes during their Xbox presentation. This isn't the first time that Microsoft has stumbled into an embarassment over gender issues, but at the rate the PR gaffes in the launch of the Xbox One are accumulating, perhaps they would have been better off just letting it happen; it’ll be over soon."

+ - OMG Pwnies! Pinkie Pie earns $60K at Pwn2Own with three Chromium 0-day exploits->

Submitted by Tackhead
Tackhead (54550) writes "Hot on the hooves of Sergey Glazunov's hack 5-minutes into Pwn2Own, an image of an axe-wielding pink pony was the mark of success for a hacker with the handle of Pinkie Pie. Pinkie Pie subtly tweaked Chromium's sandbox design by chaining together three zero-day vulnerabilities, thereby widening his appeal to $60K in prize money, another shot at a job opportunity at the Googleplex, and instantly making Google's $1M Pwnium contest about 20% cooler. (Let the record show that Slashdot was six years ahead of this particular curve, and that April Fool's Day is less than a month away.)"

+ - Samsung settles with Rambus in patent dispute.->

Submitted by Tackhead
Tackhead (54550) writes "After almost a decade of legal wrangling, Samsung has settled with Rambus over the antitrust case (regarding allegations of price-fixing for DDR and SDRAM) that was scheduled to proceed this month. As part of the settlement, Samsung agrees to purchase $200M in Rambus stock, pays $200M in cash to Rambus, plus $25M per quarter for the next 5 years in licensing fees. No immediate word on the implications for Micron or Hynix."
