Journal: Help mounting new ipod in Linux

Journal by TPFH

Got a new 80gig video ipod.

Maybe it is about time for me to get a new computer but I am dual booting between Win98 and Mandrake 10.2.

Looking at /boot I see vmlinuz-2.6.11-6mdk so I guess that is the kernel I am using.

I do have a firewire card, but the ipod came with a USB cable. When I connect it the ipod displays a message saying "do not disconnect." However, I do not receive any messages about mounting a new drive or device. I tried going to Mount Points in the Control Center, but it does not detect any new drives. Tried looking at /proc/scsi/scsi but it does not show any apple devices.

And I installed and tried running gtkpod, but I don't believe that will work unless I have already mounted the ipod.

Any advice on mounting? Would it help if I went out and got a firewire cable?
I would prefer to do stuff in Linux, but if anyone knows where I can get a Win98 driver without shelling out any money that might be an OK workaround.

And maybe I need to upgrade my distro or something.
Possibly I could get cheap computer with newer hardware at Free Geek. I've never inquired how much they sell their boxes for.

Thanks.

Journal: Serenity

Journal by TPFH

This might be old hat, or redundant.

I am probably not the first person to say this, but I lost a friend a littlewhile ago (Err someone un-friended me) (I am guessing) because I haven't been posting a lot lately so need an obligatory journal entry to keep my friends. (If nothing else, I am still alive :)

Anyway, if you haven't seen Serenity yet, do so.

I mean now.

yes now.

shoo! get going with you to the theatre.

I do not care if you are at work. Say there is a family emergency or something.

Just drop whatever you are doing and go see Serenity NOW!!!!

and I am not just saying this because I want the movie to be successful so that we get another 2 movies and then have another chance at a new Firefly TV show. It really is that good. And if you do not think so what the heck is wrong with you?

Journal: Oranges

Journal by TPFH

This is something I posted elsewhere a few years ago.
I thought about it when I bought a chocolate lime a few days ago....

A couple of weeks ago I went to costco, we had planned on going to Fry's to get computer parts, but we had to borrow her parent's van after work and her parents live way out in the suburbs. We bought a lot of useless stuff that is really kewl, like those chocolate oranges that are now distributed by Tobbler[tm]. They used too be made by some English company but I guess they got bought out. My friend's parents are English expatriots and that is how I know this.

Anyway, we get back downtown, and we are getting into some of our loot:
Irish Cream, Louis Armstrong, and Chocolate Oranges :)

My friend remarks an example how rude Amerikan culture is in the instructions with the Chocolate Oranges. On our Amerikan bought oranges it tells you to WACK the orange before unwrapping it. In England the instructions tell you to TAP the orange.

The next evening I am trying to get ahold of my friend so that we can eat Chocolate Oranges, drink Irish Cream, and watch Southpark. She isn't home, so I decide to leave a strange message on her answering machine, as I know that she has Caller-ID and will know it is me:

"I'm an American. I'm an American and I WACK my oranges. I WACK my oranges and then I EAT my oranges. 'cause I'm an American."

Well, turns out she was having a "girl's night out" and she listened to my message with her friends. Her girl friends who didn't have the benefit of knowing our conversations the night before.

Well, my defrag is now at 96%

It seems like speed disk would defrag in a lot less time, but then the last time I used such it was on a much smaller harddrive, and on a SCSI drive, not a USB drive.

Does anyone else enjoy watching the blocks move around durring a defrag?

At the very least it is hypnotic or mesmerizing or something. Maybe I ought to try it when I'm having trouble sleeping.

The subject is the numbers for last night's Megabucks Lotto drawing. I was buying tickets for a while when the jackpot was way above the odds against winning. I could have sworn I had those numbers at one time. I always get quick picks because the odds of any one set of numbers is the same as any other. I wonder if you did statistics on the numbers that come up if some came up more often than others. It's just funny because these seem to be numbers that I might pick if I were to bother picking numbers. I'd also be tempted to pick 1 2 3 4 5 6.

But I should have won!

Maybe I should sue?

It wouldn't have been the 30 million dollar jackpot that was the final winner, but I'd be happy with 1.6 million or whatever it was.

And I know that the lottery is a waste of money. Part of it was desperation.

I also do have a fascination with probability.

Maybe if I play the lottery again I'll use these numbers. They seem like good numbers. And just because they came up once doesn't change the odds of them coming up again.

Or maybe I'll write a program to get all the numbers and find which ones come up the most and use them.

All I want is 30 Million dollars. Is that too much to ask for?

The defrag is now at 97%

OK, so I'm late in discovering the world of downloadinv via bit torrents. I started last week and have gone a little crazy. I haven't been called by my ISP yet (knock wood).

But I think I screwed up one of my harddrives because of this. Maybe it was running too many torrents at the same time. Maybe it was copying files to the harddrive while running multiple torrents. It is an external USB harddrive. Last night I was really worried I might have a virus or something because things were running obviously slow in places.

Today I had the bright idea that maybe I should run scandisk on the drive because some folders disappeared or were renamed weird.

As far as I can tell the worst of the dammage is I lost a lot of filenames. The data seems to be intact, including my emusic.com collection, and the id3 tags for the jazz I personally ripped, and then tagged with precise detail of who composed, and who performed on each song. (Easier for some albums than others.)

And I think the tagging program I'm using can rename the files automatically while I sleep or something.

Just another reason I prefer Unix. But I haven't gotten bittorrent to run under linux yet. I'm thinking of upgrading. I didn't want to upgrade because everything was working good, except now sometimes when I try to install software I can't find it. (I tried to install bittorrent. It says it is insalled, but torrent and bittorrent are not working at the command line. Neither is bt. Sometimes people make the command to execute the program different from the programs name. OK, I haven't run across that very often but when I do it annoys the fsck out of me.) But Mozilla isn't being responsive lately in Linux. Sometimes I have to click repeatedly on a link, and some of the java/javascript stuff isn't working. I can't search UBL in Mozilla in Linux, some I'm thinking of upgrading to the latest Mandrake.

I'd like to try Debian, but I think I'll wait until I get my next box, which might be a while since I'm unemployed. One thing I'll tell you about the next box I get built for me, it will have drivebays or whatever they are called for the harddrives so I can get a bunch of harddrives and experiment with OSs when I want to.

I guess I'm rambling on tonight. I'm feeling a little down. I would say it is not the holiday, because I hate the holidays (long story, don't ask). But for the past few years I've had someone to spend them with and AFAIK I'll be alone tomorrow. OK, the money thing is really starting to worry me. I think I'm going to go back to school and get loans to get by until I figure out something better. Unemployement in PDX is now like 9%, and that's only the offical statistic.

But anyway. I installed Norton Speeddisk to optimize my external harddrive that was having problems. It said it found something that needed to be fixed, and wanted to run Norton Disk Doctor to fix it. Well, I didn't install Norton Disk Doctor because when I had it installed on my older computer it froze the computer every time it ran, and it replaced Scandisk as the default "check out the harddrive when it needs to be checked" program, so evertime I win95 crashed and I had to reboot inproperly, I had to be really quick about hitting F9 (or is it F8 I can never remember) to manually run scandisk or my computer would just freeze up. So right now I'm running Defrag and hope that fixes it. Otherwise I'll do the long scandisk tonight or something.

But it got me to thinking that if you use p2p software, especially if you use a specific harddrive mainly for p2p stuff, it is going to have fragmentation hell, and I haven't defragged this harddrive since I started using it.

So remember, defrag your harddives regularly, say once a month?

Norton Speed Disk is good too, but I refuse to install any of the other Norton Utilities from bad experiences in the past. Antivirus is good. One time when I tried to uninstall Norton Utilities using Norton Uninstall it FUBARed the computer. Fortunately I didn't lose anything really valuable.

(I now await the lawsuit from Symantec.)

Journal: Here's the Rest of our Lives 2

Journal by TPFH

I'll preface this by saying that I planned on posting this, or something to this effect, no matter who won.

If I had been journalling in 2000 I would have.... Well, maybe I should talk about that first. Election night 2000, I voted for Nader, and I was actually more afraid of four years of Gore than of Bush. It was too close to call and I think I posted the quote below to a usenet newsgroup.

When Bush ended up winning the electoral college under suspicious circumstances, and losing the popular vote to boot, I thought that it would be the best possible outcome considering the canidates. Note that I really really didn't want Gore to be President. I didn't want Bush either, but it seemed to me that without winning the popular vote, Bush didn't exactly have a mandate. Maybe that would force him to show some restraint.

Was I wrong or what? GWB has shown arrogance beyond what I thought possible in a politician, and I'm pretty cynical about politicians. Four years later, he wins the election by the skin of his teeth, and still is acting as if he has a mandate. I remember reading a headline that said "Bush reaching out to Kerry supporters." Well, Mr. Bush, I may have voted for Kerry, but I was never a Kerry supporter, so fuck you.

Never mind the Ballots...

We are not saying "Don't Vote". Whether we vote or not, or who we vote for, is largely unimportant. What is important is realising that it is not a cross on a piece of paper which counts, but how we spend the rest of our lives. Real change comes about not because we vote for it, but because we fight for it, shout for it, work for it. Placing hopes and fears on who holds power, or who will gain power through voting, is wasting time which might be spent in creating alternatives, both for ourselves and for our communities. Whether you choose to vote or not does not interest us. But we ask you: Organise! Educate! Participate!

...Here's the Rest of your life:

So now what do we do?

There is a possibility that voter fraud will be found, or that Bush will be impeached, but even if we got rid of both Bush and Cheney, most likely the replacement would be yet another scumbag politician. We vote for president once every 1461 days. What matters more, what we do on that one day, or the 1460 days in between?

Yes, I go to political demonstrations. I've had mixed feelings about that for the past few years. Are they really effective? I suppose that depends on how you define effective. If anything, I like to think that it helps preserve our freedom of speach. Use it or lose it. Another thing is that it lets people know that they are not alone.

I still wonder if there is something that would be most effective in getting out a message than protest, or a way to make protests more effective. These days protests are pretty much patronised by the mainstream media. A lot of times they seem to search out for the least intellegent statement from the least articulate protester for their soundbite coverage of the event.

A lot of times I think it is the little things that matter. Where do you shop for your groceries? How much do you drive your car? Heck, even how we treat each other, especially those that we disagree with.

I suppose there is letter writing too. Writing to our congress critter, writing letters to the editor. They haven't had opposing viewpoints on TV in years, but it can still help to write to the TV and Radio stations, especially if you say you are copying the letter to the FCC. (And do copy them.)

So, how does our country survive the next four years?

I can't think of much to say except make ourselves a pain in the ass to the politicians whenever reasonably possible.

Can anyone think of anything better or more specific?

Or, now that I've waited a week after the election, is everyone sick of this subject by now?

There are actually a lot of more practical things I could suggest here. I don't have the time right now, but maybe later, or maybe in discussion. Comments please?

Journal: Monica Huggett vs Barbara Honegger

Journal by TPFH

A few months ago I decided to sell some of my DVDs that were redundant, in order to justify buying some music. These days, I'm getting more and more into classical music and I wanted to look for more music from Monica Huggett.

The first album I purchased of hers is Sonatas & Partitas of JS Bach. It is solo violin and very good in my opinion. She was born and raised in the UK, formally trained in London, but lives in Portland Oregon. At the time I purchased the double CD I was told she was president of the Oregon Baroque Society (or something) (she might still be president). I had since purchased another CD that she was a part of, and download another album when I was on emusic.com, but I wanted more. She both plays violin as well as conducts and I was interested in getting anything new that she was a part of.

Now, here comes the funny story. For some reason I made a weird dyslexic mistake and replaced the name Monica Huggett with Barbara Honegger. Monica and Barbara both have 3 Syllables, and their last names both start with an H. Other than that, there is nothing that I know of that they have in common. Barbara Honegger is not a musician, or at least, that is not what she is known for.

Barbara Honegger is a research analyst. She was part of the Reagan-Bush Presidential, and made part of Reagan's cabinet. In 1983 she resigned from that possition because of moral problems she had with the administration. In 1989 she released a book, October Suprise, that documented what happened with Iran Contra. There is also a book with the same subject, and the same title by Gary Sick, but my political science teacher when I bought the book many years ago prefered Barbar Honegger's account because she was not personally involved in the issues at hand, and because she is a true conservative, and thus not just spreading conspiracy theories out of partisan BS.

To be honest, I only got a little more than a hundred pages into it. It is pretty dry reading. But it has been on my mind for the past few months because the upcoming election, and the rumors of another October Surpise. This year the expected October Suprise was supposed to be the announcement that Osama bin Ladin was captured, even though he was supposidly captured a year ago or something. It didn't really have anything to do with the October Suprise of 1980, but I was still thinking I ought to read it before election time.

Well, too late now. And since tomorrow is election day I think it is too late for an October Surpise this year. But that's probably why I confused Monica Hugget and Barbara Honegger.

Note, that this is not intended as a political JE. I do do those of course but this is more just a funny story while everyone is so tense about "the most important election in our lifetime."

I'll probably write a more politically oriented JE tomorrow, explaining why I put that in quotes. For now, just read this and laugh. Laughter is good medicine.

Listening to Bach is also good medicine. Go online and buy Sonatas & Patitas, it is good.

(For obvious reasons, the clerk I asked for help finding violin music by Barbara Honegger had never heard of her.)

Spam

Journal: Competitor Spamming (It was only a matter of time.) 1

Journal by TPFH

I've now started tweaking with my spamassasin user_prefs such that once someone spams me, the domain name they are advertising will give future emails a +3 score. (Also note that I try to whitelist EVERYONE I correspond with.)

body ANNOYINGDOMAIN01 /candypersonal\.com/i
score ANNOYINGDOMAIN01 3
describe ANNOYINGDOMAIN01 domain name found in spam in the past

I still like to do a quick googlegroups and look at the site before I insert it. Today I found this

As a result of someone's evil plot, a series of SPAM messages have been recently sent on behalf of our company. We are strongly confused about true reasons of this severe violation of strict WWW principles. However, we are inclined to believe the people responsible for this are likely to be our competitors. The SPAM campaign was deliberately carried out with the direct reference to our company to destroy our clean reputation.

Please disregard and delete the messages you have received recently that were allegedly sent by us. We have never used SPAM as a means of achieving anything, moreover, we are active members of many anti-spam organizations, as well as SPEWS.ORG since 2001. Hence, we contribute to combating SPAM in any possible way we can.

I'm inclined to give them the bennefit of the doubt. I suppose that it is possible they were responsible, but put up a disclaimer on the front page to avoid retaliation, but there is no way to be certain.

I have predicted in the past that this will be the future of spamming. If it comes true things will get really ugly. But someday, and it might be soon, the scum sucking spammers will finally realize that people hate spam, and turn from selling it as advertising, to ruining people's competition.

It will certainly make spam fighting more complicated.

Journal: The Boondocks on Illegal Downloading (& Personal stuff) 2

Journal by TPFH

Aarron McGruder can be funny with the less serious issues as well as the overwhelming political issues of our times.

Blogging. Personal Stuff.

I need to be getting more excercise. Yes, I bicycle a lot. That's not enough. I've been thinking of getting back into running. I haven't been into running since I was a teenager. When I was in college I walked everywhere. I also went out to concerts a lot, and danced, mostly skankin' and slam dancing. I realized how out of shape I am when I saw Skinny Puppy earlier in the summer. OK, I realized that I was out of shape years ago at a NoMeansNo concert.

I'm thinking if Sol can be running, I certainly can. Maybe it would give me a reason to get up in the morning. I ought to get started soon while the weather is still nice before we return to normal Oregon weather.

I'm not getting much done. I'm sleeping too much and I'm feeling crappy. At least I'm eating healthy.

I really need to get a job so I have a real reason to get up in the morning. I really like dreaming, and without something concrete to do, I have trouble resisting the temptation to just go back to sleep and dream some more. This isn't healthy and I'm heading into depression.

I need to get my referances together, and apply for the jobs that I've got good referals for. I had a lot of savings but it won't last me too much longer.

I also ought to be programming again with all the spare time I got. Maybe I should do what Sam's been doing and do JEs on the code I write. (Don't worry, I'm not going to be reporting the details of my bodily functions :)

I'm also thinking I should quit slashdot for a while, or at least restrict my slashdot time heavily, or contingient on my doing constructive activities.

I do have lots of writing I'd like to do. Maybe I'll just write JEs and read the responses.

I need to get a move on with my life.

Journal: McDonalds Chicken Selects [tm] 1

Journal by TPFH

Is anyone else out there sick of the McDonalds Chicken Selects commercials yet?
Anyone sick of them after seeing the first one?

Maybe I watch too much TV.
There is a guy who is acting paranoid that his chicken selects are going to be taken away from him. The first commercial he is in an office. The second commercial he is home alone playing an electric guitar into a headset and pretending to be a rock star who must protect his chicken selects.

You know what I would like to see?

Someone punch him in the face, (are shoots him but I don't want to offend people who read my journal) and then takes his precious chicken selects and puts them in the garbage where they belong.

Aparently they are processed meat. Chicken McNugets in the shape of a chicken strip.

Well, actually I don't know. I just use google to check my spelling and that's what came up when I put in McDonals Chicken Selects.

I haven't eaten McDonalds "food" in 15 years now so I'm not going to bother to find out myself.

This concludes the psychotic rant that will get me sued by a big corporation for this evening. Stay tuned for useless news. Blah!

OK, I'm going out to a concert now.
I plan to dance and have fun etc.
Good night! :)
