+ - Indefinite Imprisonment for website content->

Submitted by
Suriken
Suriken writes "In an unprecedented move, the New Zealand Solicitor General is seeking an indefinite prison sentence against American businessman Vince Siemer for alleged breach of an interim gag order now more than three years old. Siemer was jailed for six weeks last year for refusing to take down a website accusing chairman of Vector Energy, Michael Stiassny, of suspect business practices.
Because he still refuses to take down the website, NZ Solicitor-General David Collins QC wants to lock up Siemer indefinitely, merely for asserting his own free speech
"David Collins says the contempt committed by Vince Siemer is the most serious he has ever encountered and he has no choice but to seek such a severe penalty." (TVNZ)
"Siemer's defence claims the Solicitor General's action is barred by double jeopardy. He also maintains he had long ago proven in Court that the injunction was incorrect in fact and law but that the judge simply ignored the law and evidence. He says the gag order violates his freedom of expression guarantees in these circumstances.""

You're damn well right
despite all this posturing by the GIMP-fanboys, the fact is that photoshop pretty much blows it out of the water.
I use photoshop for plenty of design work, (although I tend to use the whole illustrator-indesign-photoshop combo, so linux has a fair way to go before it can meet that, sure there are some programs out there that do _some_ of the stuff I need to do, but on the whole they are all just too limited)

White House E-mail Scandal Widens 839

Posted by kdawson
from the what-did-they-know-and-when dept.
Spamicles alerts us to a report just issued (PDF) by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. At least 88 White House officials used Republican National Committee email accounts for government business. The RNC has destroyed at least some of the emails from 51 of those officials. Law requires emails sent by officials to be stored or recorded. There is evidence that White House lawyers and the (current) Attorney General knew of this but did not act to stop it. From the article: "These e-mail accounts were used by White House officials for official purposes, such as communicating with federal agencies about federal appointments and policies... Given the heavy reliance by White House officials on RNC e-mail accounts, the high rank of the White House officials involved, and the large quantity of missing e-mails, the potential violation of the Presidential Records Act may be extensive."

+ - Election farce in Scotland

Submitted by

Peil writes "In the most closely contested elections in Scotland since devolution it appears that the electoral system in Scotland has failed badly on two counts.

Firstly, in addition to the first past the post system for electing Members of the Scottish Parliament, the Single transferable vote was brought in for local council elections. This has caused no end of confusion with an estimated 100k ballot papers being classed as void due to being filled incorrectly.(http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/6 623287.stm)

Secondly,the team providing electronic counting of ballot papers had a technical snafu which led to counts being suspended overnight — apparently the counting machines worked perfectly, it was when they fed he results back to a central database for collation that it all went pear shaped (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/glasgow_and_w est/6623239.stm)"
