Maybe a brainfart..but here goes..

Has anyone worked on a time based password system..such as.. the timing between the entry of the characters? So 11 then isnt the same as 1 1

I find that I have a few passwords that I use that I end up with a typing rhythm for certain character sets. I could logically break and wait on some.. or speed some up and slow some down consciously.. the intent of course being to add another completely random variable into the password thing..

You could have different timing resolutions for different levels of security. Imagine the difficulty of a password with only 2 characters exactly 1.756 seconds apart .. with a resolution of .002 seconds..and someone who can flip a coin, catch it, and click the second character consistently because of muscle memory and repetition. (random specs..but you get the picture)

And then the same scheme with a 1.5 second resolution for not so strict security. (again..random specs..but you get the picture)

Of course you would have words or phrases with timings in between so that...

"the l a z y dog" isnt the same as

"t h e lazy do g"

simply by the timing between the characters.

You would need to add or change passwords by typing them a few times until you can get the timing right for the resolution..and I would think a test or two before setting the password with timing..somthing like the voice recognition training...

and theres my brainfart for the day..enjoi.

We upgraded a dinosaur legacy system for all the functions..yes.. ALL.. at the University I worked for.

Give a brief how great the software is schpeel then teach the boss-appropriate functions/screens (reporting mostly I would assume) and expect to live a life of "whats this?" and "I need a special report".

Like many here I have written a few apps in my time and no matter how much you think you know what the client wants, or how much better you know than the client, the fact is.. they have to eat that dog food every day and damn skippy they should have the biggest say in how it tastes.

The question is who should have the "most input". Not who should decide or implement things. Input. Surely that is the users who have direct knowledge, experience, necessity, and workflow to fit in with almost any software.

At the redesign point, the users should probably be almost all the input unless you want a never-ending Office type software cycle.

I had to go through a set of lights by a couple truck stops back in the day more than once a week. I noticed grackles (crowish kinda birds) that would wait on the posts or nearby for the lights to turn red. Then they would jump down and pick the grasshoppers and bugs out of the 18 wheeler grills. When the light turned green, they all flew back up and waited. They were quite well fed.

Would you pay (guesstimates) $1200 for an xbox or $700 for a cell phone.. I am as against this locking crap as much as the next guy but you have to realize the hardware, software, support and infrastructure cost a few more dollars than the free phone or the $199-$399 you pay for xbox etc..

My guess is we would have a squeel-fest if the price was a real market retail price for these items.

I would think the CC companies would be all about loving this.. and the store owner will always have to take a hit.. here's the problem..

So you buy $100 on a credit card, the fee is lets say 3% so you get a $3 fee, so you process the card for $103.. which gets hit with a 3% fee.. which turns out to be a $3.09 fee to the store.. Not as bad as not getting any of it I suppose.. but the banks win.. the banks always win..

Smart/Cell phones have become an addiction. Pure and simple. Just the thought of leaving it at home or maybe your plan expiring sends people into a DT OMG nothing else matters till I get this thing back frenzy. A couple years ago I was there. I recognized the signs of addiction. I made the choice to put it down and walk away. Yes I have a piece of crap that we take on trips and whatnot..but the vast majority of the time I live untethered. I have to admit the first couple weeks without it in my pocket was pretty difficult. But after a while the sense of being free from the nonstop barrage of texts and calls and not to mention the surveillance..just the freedom of not being tied to the damn thing was worth the pain of separation. But..but.. I can turn it off any time I need to... yea.. sure you can..sure you can. This story isn't about security.. it's about how can I keep my addiction.
