+ - Moneybookers cancelled our account due to BitTorre

Submitted by
Skal Tura
Skal Tura writes "We sell BitTorrent related services, and moneybookers decided to cancel our account due to this, telling us we have 15days to withdraw our balance but at the sametime making it impossible to withdraw the remaining balance. Our questions to them go unanswered. Do we have anykind of recourse? What would you do in our position? The balance there is not sufficient to justify travelling to UK and hiring UK lawyer, so what next?"

+ - Facebook's compiled PHP, HipHop for PHP->

Submitted by Skal Tura
Skal Tura (595728) writes "Lately there was rumours of Facebook forking PHP, and it turns out they were working for the last 26 months on a PHP Compiler, called HipHop for PHP. Compiling PHP in-itself is nothing new, but how they do it they are able to achieve upto 50% less CPU load, best of all: It's almost completely transparent, and comes with experimental interpreter HPHPi."

+ - Starting a small Datacenter, what would you do?

Submitted by Skal Tura
Skal Tura (595728) writes "I have a chance to start out an small datacenter (21m2), on a building where comes a single 1Gbps fiber connection. So we are talking quite small operation here, maybe a maximum of 100 servers. The space itself is rather cheap, bandwidth costs a lot here in Finland. With 100Mbps connectivity this DC can be startup with as little as around maximum 700euro monthly costs (Space + Connectivity w/SLA + Networking gear electricity), or with non-SLA connectivity around 300euro per month. What would a fellow /. reader do with such an opportunity? What would you watchout for in this kind of an attempt? And what would you make of this opportunity? Price competition is easy here, normally colocation for midtower server costs 183e/month, with 500gb traffic cap. Dedicated market doesn't really exist here, but i lack the budget to provide dedicated services initially."

+ - Your favourite rapid development methods for PHP?->

Submitted by
Skal Tura
Skal Tura writes "I see too little of time is spent on concentrating on faster development methods and cycles in general on software development. As a web application engineer i am curious of what kind of ways is being employed to develop faster, with higher code quality.
What are your favourite rapid development methodologies for PHP? Do you use frameworks, such as CakePHP, Zend or CodeIgniter? Adhere to XP, RAD or Agile philosophies? Personally i prefer to just write small snippets used in many parts of a project as included objects, and have done so for years. What's yours preferred way?"

+ - Second Life Financial Sector in Crisis?->

Submitted by Anonymous
Anonymous (595728) writes "Second Life's micro-economy is currently in the grip of a financial crisis, its real, its here and its now! This all started some months ago and is in part thanks to Linden Lab's sheer incompetence and greed. Many things have led SL economy to the edge of collapse, many of them had to do with the way Linden Lab handles matters. They keep slapping `residents` in the face, with mainland market flood, age verification threatening, which is by the way illegal in many countries, lies, poor communication, and last but not least, gambling ban."
