I want to install, but I need to back up first. I also want to read MacInTouch, etc to see what's sprung up. I also need to check to make sure I have enough free HD space. Favorite part so far that I saw at the store - new screensavers, including using cover art from iTunes. AWESOME.

Okay...gotta go catch up on journals, THEN back up. Maybe install tomorrow night since I don't have to work on Sunday. :) A whole night of geeky goodness.

Like anyone bothers to back up everything before doing an install on their home machine ...

      - says me after spending every night for the last week burning over 100 backup dvds - 400 gigs so I can install SuSE 9.3 ... almost there ... bought a 3rd 50-pack this morning ...)

      jeeze - I remember when 100 5-1/4" floppies was a complete backup.

      • Dude, backing up to 100 DVDs? That's like...insane. How much is an external hard drive? Well, more than that, but wow. Painful.
        • Gongrats on Tiger. We're all waiting for your report on how it runs, you know :-) So, are you going to back up everything, or just the "important stuff"?

Dude, backing up to 100 DVDs? That's like...insane.

Yep, that's me - one crazy canuck. 150 blank dvds cost me $45 Canadian - and I now have a proper snapshot. A 400 gig external HD would be 10x that - and I wouldn't be able to later take a disk from the collection and lend it out.

          It's actually prettttty coooooool ...

What I would have done normally wo

          • Well, thanks to my purchase of a 250 Firewire external, I can now back up my 40GB internal with ease. And it'll come in handy, since I need to free up a couple of gigs for the installation. :)
            • 250 Firewire external,
sweet! Guess you WILL be doing a full backup after all.
              • Started the full backup last night...and this morning, it was hung. So, I guess I'll try it again tonight!
                • Overnight sounds like way too long ... How are you doing the backup? File-by-file copy is slow as molasses and runs into problems if there are bad sectors and/or a corrupted fs.

Normally, I don't burn 400 gigs to dvds, but in this case its stuff that I had meant to remove permanently, just got way behind :-)

If I were to do a backup of, say, a 40 gig /home partition, mounted as /dev/hdb, to a file on a drive temporarily mounted on /mnt/backup, I'd just do

                  dd if=/dev/hdb of=/mnt/backup/backup_of_home.img

                  • No, I think there's a bug in Disk Utility on the Tiger DVD. When I tell it to create a new image, it says something about...something else. Too tired right now. I started up with the Panther CD and used Disk Utility to create a disk image...in about a half hour.
                    • half an hour sounds about right. So, good luck on the install. I'm babysitting an upgrade to SuSE 9.3 on one of my home boxes - its 1AM so I'll probably take a nap for an hour or so, since it still has a way to go (thank god its 1 dvd, instead of 5 cds).

So, good luck on your install, and enjoy the eye candy :-)

                    • Started the install, wrote in my journal, had marital relations with my wife, and now it's done!

I've installed one extra widget as of now, and am looking to set up the RSS feed for my/inbox and my/amigos. :)

I'll save Automator for tomorrow. :)

      • Somewhere in the neighbor hood of $50 for the media alone?

Plus... I can't imagine that I wouldn't immediately buy a 500GB external drive for the amount of time it would take to swap & burn 100 DVDs.

        Ouch.
        • The time really isn't a factor - put the dvd in, select the files, go do something else while it's burining, when its done, k3b sounds the bugle horn to let me know to insert another dvd ...
          • ...

            100 times?

Dude, you have WAY more patience than I. :)
            • Well, about 120 times.

              • It's not like it prevented me from doing anything else

                using your computer...
                • Who has only one computer nowadays :-)

However, I'm in the process of doing an update on that box now (to SuSE 9.3) , and I'm getting a warning that my 7.5 gig /usr partition is NOT BIG ENOUGH any more. 8.1 gigs of files to update!!! - and no, I didn't select everything ... not like there isn't a lot of room on that machine (160 and 250 gig hds), but the machine I'm writing from is limited to 40+30. Guess it's gonna be time to buy at least another 160 next month :-(

Anyhow, let's see how much it crams into

                  • Reminds me a bit of setting up a mail proxy on an old 486 with a 210 MB hard drive. We were installing Debian from floppies, and it kept failing. It wasn't documented (not sure if it is now) that the installer dumps the five disks' contents into root before the install starts. With the drive so constrained, we'd only allotted ten or so MB for root, and it was nearly full before it started installing files.
                    • Man, I remember when a complete multitasking OS (microware OS9, from the '80s, no relation to the mac) would run off a 360k floppy - this "Moore's law of the OS" is really killing me ...

Of course, a 160 gig hard disk is 1/3 the price of tht 360k drive way back when, so I can live with the pain (especially since the install still has a couple of HOURS to go -sheesh, its humungous!!! the installer boot screen is SO cool - a few beers help :-)

  • It's pretty sweet man. Especially on a machine that supports coreimage.

Check out the H.264 trailers apple has up on their Quicktime page. The Serenity trailer looked dang purdy. I hope you have a Mac that's fast enough to play them.
  • I really do. I don't have a Mac yet. :(

I should get a mini, but Carolyn and I are saving up for our honeymoon, so I oughtn't. Heh. I used oughtn't.

    Have fun with Tiger! ROAAR!

Hey, is that your iMix? I didn't know you liked Kasabian if so. I'm really enjoying that album more and more (the rhythms and basslines are killer).

Oh!!! Now I'm going to check out Bloc Party finally. Excellent. :)

    Happy Friday Samamamamy!
    • I don't know Kasabian that well. I think I like a song by them, but I couldn't tell you which one.

And dude, Bloc Party is ROCKING my world. Everything I hear by them sounds like laying around making love all day.

Except for the really edgy songs, but those sound like, uh, taking a shower. To clean up. After laying around making love all day. Or. Something.

      • I don't know about overall merit, but Kasabian jams. That's for sure. I'ma send you a disc. :)

I'm going to join that sex partay...I just bought Bloc Party. You sold me on it. Honestly, how could you NOT be sold on making love all day and taking the occasional shower?? Really.

I'll have to listen to it tomorrow though cuz I'm getting pooped. :)

        Sweet Dreams!
        • Put it on while you go to sleep and you'll have dreams of charging across fields of tall grasses in pursuit of a woman in flowing purple gossamer robes who, when you finally catch her, cradles you like a lover and caresses your skin while you sleep.
          • Nice! I wish I had read that last night... ;)
            • Well, let me know what you think of it. Have you checked out the Futureheads yet? What about Wheat?
              • I like Bloc Party. I'm processing it still, but I like it. I think Tulips is my favorite and I really enjoyed the opening track on the album. Gimme a little more time with it... :)

What I've heard of Wheat I like too! Haven't listened to Futureheads much.

I just realized (DUH AGAIN) that the Seahorses is the Seahorses with John Squire. I didn't make that connection until a couple weeks ago. I always liked that song you gave me and was wondering who it was. I was laying in bed one night and the Seahor
              • Sammy, don't punch me like you usually do, but can you hear that Tulip sounds an awful lot like Clocks from Coldplay? It has very similar syncopation, lyrics, etc. I know you're not huge on Colplay, but Tulips sure sounds like Clocks...not in a bad, total rip-off way, just stylistically.

I'm going to listen to the album through some more today. I like the singer too.
  • Right now...

    C'mon, little Ice Book!

  • Sure, gloat over how you have yours now, while mine is still rumbling down the Pennsylvania Turnpike in a UPS truck. You'd think Amazon would have shipped it last night so it would arrive today, but nooooooooo.

    • You should have yours now. Mine is finally installed. :)
      • Fuck UPS. I didn't take an entire day off from work just to wait for one 2 lb. package, so instead of a new operating system, I get a sticky note on my screen door.

I never have to put up with shit like this from FedEx.

A more politely worded nastygram has already been sent to Amazon.

        • I got a note from FedEx on Friday for a package that was sent from Apple. We filled out the little slip and hopefully they'll just leave shit from now on. We live in the suburbs, for crissakes, and the package they were leaving was a flatpack that was probably less than a pound.
