Nicholas was persecuted under the Roman Emperor Diocletian and spent many years in prison. By Gods grace he managed to survive and was released under Emperor Constantine. He became the bishop of Myra and later went on to serve at the Council of Nicea in AD 325 (they were responsible for the Nicene Creed).
