Grammar aside I think the word you were thinking of was "independent" not "free".

That being said, you're right that the British colonies in North America had nothing to do with the burning of the White House. It was the British navy, not the colonists, that raided and burnt down the White House.

Cops don't shoot unarmed rich white guys. Hell, rich white guys can take up arms against the government and the right will call them patriots. Imagine if a black man did what Bundy did. Talk radio would be calling for a military strike.

I'd hardly call Al Bundy a rich, white guy.

I'll take a government I can vote out of office than a corporation that can rebrand, hide behind subsidiaries, operate out of tax havens, etc.

Large corporations have proven time and again that, when left to their own devices, they will screw over consumers, each other and anyone unfortunate enough to live near their factories. The only check on this type of amoral behaviour is responsible, democratically elected governments.

I've been using various flavours of Unix (commercial and free) for over 25 years and I've never had occasion to use '--'. I may have even come across it at some point but since I haven't needed it it's not something in my every day bag of tricks.

It does sound as though it's one of those things that once you need it you never forget it.
