While everyone is saying how horrible this is, I say it is a GOOD THING, but not because I like censorship. Just like SOPA, these sorts of behaviors provide a HUGE competitive advantage to networks that can set themselves up to enable truly free communications. As things get worse, countries and areas that provide safe havens for real communication can also make a killing (just like some foreign banks do in aiding tax evasion). What someone needs to do is start building those services....

"corporation" generally refers to the for-profit kind. It is shorthand for "For profit corporation". When speaking of things like Greenpeace, people refer to them as "Non-profits", as shorthand for "non profit corporation". Quit being pedantic and arguing semantics. You know what people mean.

Actually, my 1 year of film school and the excellent training I received has been the most valuable single year of education I ever had! It got me my first job out of college. In grad school I got to work with google video because of my video experience. Now i work in advertising as a web dev and my film background meant I was more valuable than a raw CS person.

Best Man Rigs Newlyweds' Bed To Tweet During Sex 272

from the nice-feed dept.
When an UK man was asked to be the best man at a friend's wedding he agreed that he would not pull any pranks before or during the ceremony. Now the groom wishes he had extended the agreement to after the blessed occasion as well. The best man snuck into the newlyweds' house while they were away on their honeymoon and placed a pressure-sensitive device under their mattress. The device now automatically tweets when the couple have sex. The updates include the length of activity and how vigorous the act was on a scale of 1-10.

Pirates as a Marketplace 214

Posted by Soulskill
from the marrrrrrrket-share dept.
John Riccitiello, the CEO of Electronic Arts, made some revealing comments in an interview with Kotaku about how the company's attitudes are shifting with regard to software piracy. Quoting: "Some of the people buying this DLC are not people who bought the game in a new shrink-wrapped box. That could be seen as a dark cloud, a mass of gamers who play a game without contributing a penny to EA. But around that cloud Riccitiello identified a silver lining: 'There's a sizable pirate market and a sizable second sale market and we want to try to generate revenue in that marketplace,' he said, pointing to DLC as a way to do it. The EA boss would prefer people bought their games, of course. 'I don't think anybody should pirate anything,' he said. 'I believe in the artistry of the people who build [the games industry.] I profoundly believe that. And when you steal from us, you steal from them. Having said that, there's a lot of people who do.' So encourage those pirates to pay for something, he figures. Riccitiello explained that EA's download services aren't perfect at distinguishing between used copies of games and pirated copies. As a result, he suggested, EA sells DLC to both communities of gamers. And that's how a pirate can turn into a paying customer."

While I wish there wasn't this intimidation process... I don't think a person's rights and privileges are up for "vote". I don't want other people deciding how I can and cannot live my life - CERTAINLY when it doesn't involve them. Voting on who OTHER PEOPLE can and can't marry bothers me on a deep level, far away from whether it is 'gay' rights or 'racial' rights or... I don't know.... 'alien' rights. I am all for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Voting on other people's marriages seems an offense against all three. Against such a threat... I think anything is justified. Kudos to the intimidators for not just shooting them all.

US Colleges Say Hiring US Students a Bad Deal 490

Posted by CmdrTaco
from the talking-to-you-cliff dept.
theodp writes "Many US colleges and universities have notices posted on their websites informing US companies that they're tax chumps if they hire students who are US citizens. 'In fact, a company may save money by hiring international students because the majority of them are exempt from Social Security (FICA) and Medicare tax requirements,' advises the taxpayer-supported University of Pittsburgh (pdf) as it makes the case against hiring its own US students. You'll find identical pitches made by the University of Delaware, the University of Cincinnati, Kansas State University, the University of Southern California, the University of Wisconsin, Iowa State University, and other public colleges and universities. The same message is also echoed by private schools, such as John Hopkins University, Brown University, Rollins College and Loyola University Chicago."
