Astronomers catch glimpse of oldest known event->

Submitted by Ravalox
Ravalox writes "Astronomers around the world got a glimpse at the oldest known cosmic event when telescopes around the world turned their attention to an incoming gamma ray surge from an explosion; anticipating infrared radiation, which normally follows a gamma burst, that never arrived. The star which exploded was 30 to 100 times larger than our own sun, and erupted about 13 billion years ago. Ego Berger, assistant professor of Astronomy at Harvard, put it in these terms; "At that point the age of the universe was only 600 million years," he said. In other words, Berger said, he was looking "95 percent of the way back to the beginning of time.""

Interview for Mytheon 32

Posted by Soulskill
from the wait-for-the-vespene-farmers dept.
Kheldon tips an interview with Petroglyph's Chuck Kroegel about an upcoming MMO called Mytheon, which will be free to play, but also involve micro-transactions. It's an action strategy game with RTS and RPG elements. He says, "The game starts in the Greco-Roman era, as well as Egypt, and as time goes on we'll expand throughout the whole world. Something everyone has in common is they all have their mythologies, these beasts and these stories that have come to us through legends and folklore. All the nations of the world, they all have their own. So in our game Mytheon, we can eventually fill the Earth in terms of being able to explore mythologies of all nations. It's an action/strategy game, with elements of RPG, and elements of RTS that people have to come to appreciate and enjoy."
Update — 4/30 at 17:30 by SS: The summary originally linked to an article stating that Petroglyph was working with Trion World Network on Mytheon. This is not the case; they are working together on a different game, which is the MMORTS previously referenced in the title.

I have to agree, reading this can be frustrating to a seasoned posix user but the truth is linux just isn't that simplified iPod solution that appeals to the vast majority of consumers. I use Ubuntu almost exclusively and thrive in a linux environment but my girlfriend doesn't want to use my computer. It's not that she isn't smart, it's that she sees it as this obtuse, obnoxious affront to the status quo. We know it's not, but that's an example of one of several perceptual barriers Linux is going to have to vault over.

Why Microsoft Won't Have Blu-ray on the Xbox 395

Ian Lamont writes "Ever since Toshiba stopped production of HD DVD players, many Xbox 360 owners have been wondering when Microsoft will offer some sort of Blu-ray option for the Xbox 360. The answer: Probably never. Microsoft's product manager for the Xbox 360 has told Reuters that Microsoft is not in talks with Sony or the Blu-ray Association. Why not? The Industry Standard points to HDi, an obscure Microsoft technology that was part of the HD DVD interactivity layer. HDi may be dead on physical media, but it could potentially be applied to other Microsoft HD-compatible technologies such as Xbox Live Arcade and Windows Media Center, and be part of a long-term play to own a big share of the market for HD content delivered over the Internet."

Facing myriad IT problems, Fla . passes tech bill

Submitted by
coondoggie
coondoggie writes "Florida lawmakers, fed up with failed IT projects and the inability to peg responsibility for tech problems has voted to create a new state technology agency with the governor and cabinet in charge. Sen. Al Lawson, D-Tallahassee, who sponsored the IT bill said the state spends about $2 billion a year on computer systems and high-tech equipment and services. But he said some big-ticket projects have flopped, costing the state millions and diverting time and money into clean-up work instead of public services. Most recently a massive air-conditioning failure at a Florida office complex in Tallahassee disrupted state government computer traffic statewide. The outage should have been handled by a disaster recovery/backup system but despite promises, one wasn't in place. http://www.networkworld.com/community/?q=node/1472 4"

cmaster383 writes "I woke up this morning to news of iGoogle; I thought it was a great new extension of the Google Personalized Homepage. Well, sometime around 9am EST I found that I no longer had my personalized Google homepage but was left with nothing more than a new iGoogle Homepage template. Has this happened with anyone else, and if so, why!?"

I fear explanations explanatory of things explained.
