[MLB] Red Sox to open season 0-2? (Update)

Red Sox players voted unanimously to not take the field in today's exhibition game, and not to board the plane to Japan for the Season Opening Games against the Oakland A's unless their coaches get a stipend.

This could get real interesting. If they players don't go, then both games will be awarded as forfeits to the Oakland A's.

Might be the only time all year the A's have a winning record...

Update: Apparently, it's been resolved, as the Spring Training game got underway an hour late, and the players will be boarding the flight to Tokyo.

  • There's no way MLB would have let this go on, and no way if they did that they could have forced forfeiture of the games. Breaking their word and then forcing forfeiture for it? They woulda gotten killed over that, not to mention the huge financial losses over the broken Japan deal.

A game shall be forfeited to the opposing team when a team is unable or refuses to place nine players on the field.

Fortunately, MLB saw how stupid it was to give the players a travel stipend but not the coaching staff. MLB made 6 billion in revenue last year, approaching NFL-like revenue - a few hundred thousand dollars to the coaching sta
      • Sorry, you misunderstand my intent. I meant that they could not have realistically done so in the face of public opinion. Yes, they had the right to do so (although the Red Sox also could have sued for breach of contract in response).

How many games did the Red Sox win in Detroit last year? ;)

Shrug. The Sox also sucked in Seattle.

Yet they still had the best record and won seven games in a row to win the World Series! Funny that! Apparently, how many games you win in Seattle or Detroit does not necessarily affect whether you are the champion! ;-)
