Finnish Pirate Party officially registered-> 2

Submitted by
Thomas Nybergh
Thomas Nybergh writes "The Finnish Pirate Party is now officially registered (also reported by Finland's largest daily newspaper). After the Party was founded in May 2008, activists had to manually collect 5,000 supporter signatures on paper cards in order to get the movement recognized as a political party with the ability to nominate candidates for elections. Finland's party is the eight Pirate Party to be registered on the planet and intends to participate in local elections in October."

Linux-Based E-Voting In Brazil 302

Posted by kdawson
from the watch-and-learn-grasshopper dept.
John Sokol writes "I just heard from a good friend and Linux kernel hacker in Brazil that they have just finished their municipal election with 128 million people using Linux to vote. They voted nationwide for something like 5,000 city mayors. Voting is mandatory in Brazil. The embedded computer they are using once ran VirtuOS (a variant of MS-DOS); it now has its own locally developed, Linux-based distro. These are much nicer, smaller, and cheaper than the systems being deployed here in the US. Here is a Java-required site with a simulated Brazilian voting system. It's very cool; they even show you a picture of the candidate you voted for."

W3C.org Briefly Censored In Finland 115

k33l0r writes "The web site of W3C, w3.org or w3c.org, was briefly censored (Google Translation) by at least some of the local ISPs. For an unknown reason the URL was mistakenly entered into the Federal Police's censor database. Some of the Finnish ISPs use the database to filter out questionable content such as child pornography." Finnish online activist Matti Nikki describes some of the problems with this database-based censorship.

Finnish ISPs blocking w3.org as child-porn-> 1

Submitted by

shazzle writes "A few Finnish ISPs started blocking w3.org as a child-porn site. Although one of them has lifted this hasty block, there's another ISP that applied the secret list with a little delay. Here's the evidence. I think we can all agree on the fact how dangerous this kind of haphazard censorship is to free speech as well as legitimate business. Let us not forget how these kinds of mistakes are applied much easier, than corrected afterwards."
