Court Sides with eBay Seller Against Autodesk->

Submitted by
New10k
New10k writes "US District Court in Seattle has rejected Autodesk's myriad arguments regarding its software licenses and found in favor of eBay seller Timothy S. Vernor. The ruling started by ruling that Vernor was within his rights to resell copies of AutoCAD Release 14 he got in an auction. Once the court settled the legitimacy of reselling, it used that ruling as a lens to dismiss all of Autodesk's various claims. More than once the court described Autodesk's arguments as "specious" and "conflicted.""

Google lottery for seats at SketchUp conference ->

Submitted by
New10k
New10k writes "A few months before Google swooped in, the company behind SketchUp 3D CAD put on a user's conference that was wildly successful. Now Google is doing one, at the Googleplex. They won't charge a fee to attend, but because they say seats are limited, attendance is by invitation only. To get an invitation, users must sign up between now and April 30 for a lottery. Google says they will give out between 250 and 300 invitations."

Hot new laywer in eBay Reseller vs. Autodesk->

Submitted by
New10k
New10k writes "Timothy Vernor, the guy suing Autodesk in federal court over the right to sell used copies of AutoCAD, now has a high-profile new member of his legal team. Michael Withey of Seattle has won a number of front-page lawsuits over the years, including the first successful personal injury lawsuit against former Phillipine dictator Ferdinand Marcos. Vernor is already represented by watchdog group Public Citizen, which heard of his case after Shashdot reported the initial lawsuit. It looks like Vernor now has a two-part legal team; one part wants settled case law regarding software licenses and private resale (Public Citizen), and one part wants a big settlement (Withey). The new legal team submitted a amended complaint in federal court yesterday, polishing up the original complaint written and filed by Vernor without benefit of an attorney."

Submitted by
New10k
New10k writes "Following up on a recent Slashdot entry, nonprofit consumer advocacy group Public Citizen has agreed to provide an attorney to eBay seller Timothy S. Vernor, who is suing Autodesk in federal court. This is not the first time Public Citizen has represented an eBay seller. The advocacy group has identified elements of the Vernor case as one of its key litigation priorities for 2007. The article includes an interview with Vernor's new lawyer, Greg Beck, who was a software engineer for Microsoft before going to law school."

eBay Seller Files Federal Lawsuit Against Autodesk->

Submitted by
New10k
New10k writes "Tim Vernor is an eBay seller (happyhourcollectables) with over 10,000 positive reviews. He specializes in comic books but sells most everything. He got thrown off eBay after Autodesk filed complaints against him for reselling Autodesk software. He has responded by filing a federal lawsuit alleging fraudulent use of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. He has already passed the federal court's "is this guy a wacko?" test and the suit is official — Autodesk has 30 days to respond. Details at AECnews (http://aecnews.com/news/2007/09/10/2377.aspx)."
