Ebayers iphone "Scam"

Submitted by
charley kane
charley kane writes "The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well at Ebay. Take for instance this listing: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=0 19&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=2900 88305764&rd=1&rd=1 This fella figures he's gonna get the jump on Jobs and start making some cash on this iphone gadget right now! Of course unlike the wifi phone being offered by Apple Computer starting this summer, this crafty Ebayer is selling what he refers to as the "papercraft" version (see gizmodo:http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/cellphones/appl e-iphone-papercraft-model-227902.php)and it comes with a "fully charged battery" to boot ! Last I looked (2/28/07) bidding was up to $127.50 with 2 days to go, plus $10.00 shipping for the winner. Who knows, this "papercraft" wifi phone might catch on, maybe Apple could give everyone an iphone on the back of a cereal box ! (rechargeable battery not included)"

Bill Gates Talks About 640k in 1989

Submitted by
dalektcalum3
dalektcalum3 writes "I recently came across an 18 year-old talk by Bill Gates. One of the most surprising things that Bill Gates says is that in 1981, he thought that 640k would be good for 10 years. Bill has denied saying this but now we finally have proof! In addition, Bill talks about his role in starting Microsoft, Microsoft's future in OS/2, and where the software and hardware industries are heading in general."

Mark Millar Says: Video Games are for Pedos

Submitted by NateWolf
NateWolf writes "Recently Marvel Comic writer Mark Millar sat down with Newsarama for an interview about the finalization of Marvel's Civil War series. The interview goes normaly enough untill the end. When about questioned what else Millar 'had on the table' outside of comics he commented saying:

"Like all my pals, the TV and movie people have come calling and even the computer game people (which is weird because games are for pedos and I have no interest). Comics are my first love, but it would be crazy to turn down some of these gigs and so we're all biting at the moment. I've been developing King and Country as a TV thing as well as an original graphic novel, but my main area of interest is genre movies in Hollywood.

Are you kidding me? This is pretty odd coming from a guy who writes about superheros that are fan-worshiped by tons of kids around the world."

Pornography being "scrubbed" using DNS

Submitted by
ScrubIT
ScrubIT writes "Hi Guys, Just wanted to drop you a quick note and let you know of a new service we are providing for free that we are pretty excited to launch. ScrubIT.com has made publicly available a FREE recursive DNS service that blocks pornography and malicious websites. It is an excellent service for families and employers who don't want to worry about what they will be confronted with on the internet. Additionally, in private BETA is the ability to customize your personal DNS and selectively block and allow sites that you choose. Now, I realize the porn industry is going to be none to happy about this one, but it's about time someone stood up and did something. Let us know what you think."

Over 27% of Firefox patches come from volunteers

Submitted by
dolphinling
dolphinling writes "Everyone knows the Mozilla Corporation makes a lot of money and employs a lot of people now. Google has full-time employees working on Firefox too, as do a number of other places. Yet despite that, in the six months up to Firefox 2 "27% of the patches to Firefox and Gecko and other key projects were submitted by key volunteers, [and] those patches represent 24% of changes made to the source code". What's more, those numbers only counted contributers with 50 patches or more, so the actual numbers are probably quite a bit higher. It's good to see that even as Mozilla does so well in the business world, it can still keep its ties to the community so strong."

XDA-Developers site to be "taken down"

Submitted by
pilotfactory
pilotfactory writes "Microsoft has sent a cease and desist letter to XDA-Developers.com, asking that they remove all the ROM images from the site, including the archives. Sadly, this would destroy an invaluable PocketPC resource for developers and PDA enthusiasts. I somehow fail to realize how distributing ROM images for licensed PocketPC devices should do any financial damage to Microsoft..."

MSN Soapbox now in public beta

Submitted by Pasito
Pasito writes "Microsoft has opened up its YouTube killer to the public. Soapbox boasts the following features:

Soapbox allows the users to browse and watch videos at the same time.
Amazing video quality.
Go full screen without restarting the video.
RSS feeds for everything: RSS feed for a tag, a search, a users videos, etc.

What will be interesting to see if they can garner the content since for online video sites, content is king. We'll have to wait and see how they tackle the two big issues of these kinds of sites: revenue generation and copyright material."

Flash: The End of Adobe [Acrobat] Reader?

Submitted by
ThinkComp
ThinkComp writes "As hatred for Adobe Acrobat continues to grow, the fact remains that the Portable Document Format is a useful and nearly universal file format with few competitors in the same league. Meanwhile, the client software needed to use the format continues to expand in size and slow down, especially as a browser plug-in. In the interest of faster load times, fewer ads, and smaller file sizes, we've created a Flash-based PDF viewer that you can embed in web sites, including blogs. It's bare-bones, but given what YouTube's Flash-based player eventually did for on-line video, could this mean the beginning of the end for clunky software like Adobe [Acrobat] Reader 8.0?"
