roh2cool writes "The seventh Call of Duty game is being planned, and it has been dubbed Call of Duty: Black Ops. This game will be developed by Treyarch instead of Infinity Ward. Mark Lamia, Treyarch studio head, confirmed with CVG that in CoD: Black Ops, players will get dedicated game servers for the PC version of the game. Finally, PC gamers will get a chance to rejoice."

kpearson writes "Distributed.net's 8-year-old OGR-25 distributed computing project has just proven conclusively that the predicted shortest 25-mark Golomb ruler is optimal. 'The total length of the ruler is 480, with marks at positions: 0 12 29 39 72 91 146 157 160 161 166 191 207 214 258 290 316 354 372 394 396 431 459 467 480. (This ruler may alternatively be expressed in terms of the distance between those positions, which is how dnetc displays them: 12-17-10-33-19-...).' 124,387 people participated in the project and two people found the shortest ruler, one on October 10, 2007 and the other on March 24, 2008."

What's the problem? If you read it a little more thoroughly you would see that they don't give any credit with the free classes. It doesn't hurt the paying students or lower the value of the actual degrees that paying students receive. I'm severely physically disabled and was unable to finish my EE degree back in 1993 because of health reasons. I doubt I'll ever go back to school. This is a great chance for me to at least finish educating myself, degree or no degree.

Phone /w Speech Recognition for Severely Disabled

Submitted by Molon Lave
Molon Lave writes "Before I continue explaining what the Slashdot community can do to assist me, I will tell you about my situation first (briefly). It will help to understand my problems. I am a 35 year old man diagnosed with Becker's Muscular Dystrophy. It's a miracle I still live. To get to the point, I need a ventilator (good thing it's portable) to breathe and a power wheelchair to move around. All I can do is barely operate the joystick on my wheelchair (I'll have to use a tilt sensor on my head probably soon) and use a laser mouse to type with a on-screen keyboard. During the day I have an RN taking care of me, and after 6pm my parents take turns being my caregiver. The problem is I'm a bit scared if something happens to a caregiver. I am helpless and could do nothing. Sometimes a nurse scheduled to work calls and tells us she/he can't make it. Potentially I could be helpless for days if some emergency happened. I might be a bit paranoid because my caregivers are pretty reliable, but you can never be too careful when you need 24/7 life support. I am trying to find a telephone with good speech recognition that accepts commands 24/7 (always on and waiting for input). I want something I can say "call help" to or make a series of clicking noises(if my vent is disconnected) and have it call 911 and anyone else I need. I bet my old IBM T30 laptop could be programmed to dial 911 with a speech recognition package but it would not be reliable enough. I need mission critical equipment. So, I am asking if anyone who is reading this knowns of a solution. Thanks for taking time to read this!"
