Red Hat Software

Journal: A first for me.

Journal by Maul

Numerous postings were made about it.

My friends warned me about it.

Yet, I never thought it would happen to me.

Yesterday, the RPM database on my Linux box was hosed. I've heard of this happening, but I've never actually seen it in the six or so years I've been running Red Hat.

I've been toying with moving my main box to another distro for some time now. I've also been toying with Gentoo on other machines. Maybe it is time to give Red Hat and their RPMs the boot.

GameCube (Games)

Journal: Metroid Prime is the best game of this console generation!

Journal by Maul

There isn't much more I can say. I was totally blown away by this entire game. The game is near perfect in every way. If you don't have a Game Cube, buy one and get this game. It is better than anything I've played on the PS2 and X-Box.

The even more exciting thing is that the new Zelda game coming out in spring is supposedly EVEN BETTER than Metroid Prime.

User Journal

Journal: Car thieves suck.

Journal by Maul

Last month my stereo was stolen while my car was sitting in a mall parking garage. The sad thing is that it was parked in an area that typically has constant foot traffic because it was right by the entrance to the movie theaters. The car alarm was apparently useless. The San Diego Police Department are even more useless. They refuse to investigate incidents like these even though the mall security guard I talked to said that he was noticing increased incidents of theft and that it was likely somebody operating in the area. The police also refused to investigate even though I found something that was possible evidence (it appears that it might have been left by the theives).

Fast forward a month. Someone I know had his Integra stolen last week. Today it was "found."
By "found," I mean that they only managed to find the body of the car. Just about all the working parts of the car were gone. By now his engine is in some punk's Civic. The people who did this are apparently still loose on the streets.

In either case the police likely decided to move too slow, or not at all, to find these thieves.
I don't want the people who stole my stereo to be caught so I can get my stuff back. I want them caught so that they can get their asses thrown into the slammer.

Thieves who steal cars, car components, stereos, etc. are basically getting the green light by the police. While the police are working with Fuhrer Bush to take away the rights of working citizens in the sake of fighting "terrorism," they seem to have no inclination to even investigate these crimes of theft beyond putting the data down into a "log."

Role Playing (Games)

Journal: Neverwinter Nights is Great!

Journal by Maul

I've been playing Neverwinter Nights recently. The single player campaign isn't as good in storyline terms as Baldur's Gate, but it is still decent. I think the implementation of 3rd. Edition D&D rules is very well done. Some people hate 3E, but I like it very much, so I'm am very pleased with this game.

Some people have prematurely called this game a Diablo/hack-n-slash clone... but I don't believe that to be true. There are lots of cool sidequests, tons of NPC coversations, class-based quests, etc. Plus the ability to have a DM is definately cool. I believe the game is very fun to play online with people who are serious about roleplaying their characters.

I beat the game, and have now gotten into some of the top rated mods out there. Some of them are really good. I can suggest "The Spires of Ravenloft" as a good one to downlaod. It got a bit tedious at the end, but it was fun.

Journal: Great /. Blackout?

Journal by Maul

Well, I'm not participating, mainly because I don't actually mind the ads. However, I do notice that there are noticeably fewer comments today. Actually,
there seem to be fewer trolls and idiots so far.
We'll see how this turns out.

All the simple programs have been written.
