This has led to one man, unable to move or talk, to tell nurses that he doesn't want to see his father. Sad, but moving."

Boston Uni working on LED wireless networks

Madas writes "This article on Absolute Gadget details how researchers at Boston University's College of Engineering are working on devloping wireless networks that use LED lights instead of normal radio waves. This research apparently has other uses in the automobile industry. Apparently the LEDs could warn you if the driver in front has put the brakes on so could avoid hitting the car in front. Personally I'd use my vision balls that are in my thought box."

1024-bit RSA encryption closed to being hacked

Madas writes "Scientists are close to cracking 1024-bit RSA encryption. Apparently, a team of researchers working in Europe and Japan have cracked a 307-digit Mersenne number using the special number field sieve method developed by cryptology professor Arjen Lenstra. The scientists think that it will be a cinch to crack 1024-bit RSA encryption using the same method. The security industry shudders!"

Madas writes "Despite the EU thinking that Microsoft's server protocols should be freely available and on "reasonable terms", Microsoft has still managed to cut a deal with a company that doesn't compete with MS to license its server protocols. Thomas Vinje, spokesman for the European Committee for Interoperable Systems thinks this is just a load of window dressing as Quest is one of Microsoft's partners. Is this a smokescreen or the real deal?"

Madas writes "Scientists working in Cambridge have managed to make quantum encryption completely secure (registration required) by putting decoy pulses in the key transmission stream. According to the story this paves the way for safe, encrypted high-speed data links. Could this allow completely private transmission of data away from snooping eyes and ears? Or will it mean film studios can stop movies from being copied when traveling on the internet?"
