MoD Pragmatic About Street View->

Submitted by Ma8thew
Ma8thew writes "The MP for Hereford, Paul Keetch, has kicked up a fuss after Google Street View put up photos of the surroundings of the SAS base at Credenhill. However, the Ministry of Defence decided, sensibly, that this posed little security risk:

An MoD spokesman said: "The MoD cannot prevent satellites taking imagery of its establishments, however we ensure that steps are taken to protect highly sensitive equipment. "It would be impractical to ask Google to withdraw images as they can be easily obtained from other sources over which we have no influence."

School District Spying on Students->

Submitted by Ma8thew
Ma8thew writes "A lawsuit has been filed against the Lower Merion School District by a student's family after a school principle disciplined a student for 'improper behaviour in his home'. It would seem that not only do the school district have the capability to remotely activate the webcams in take-home laptops, they also believe they have a right to monitor students wherever they are in the world."

Steve Jobs explains DRM

Submitted by Ma8thew
Ma8thew writes "Steve Jobs today published a short essay on the state of DRM and music distribution online. He explains why Apple won't license FairPlay, as well as revealing that Apple would embrace a DRM free future.

For Europeans, two and a half of the big four music companies are located right in their backyard. The largest, Universal, is 100% owned by Vivendi, a French company. EMI is a British company, and Sony BMG is 50% owned by Bertelsmann, a German company. Convincing them to license their music to Apple and others DRM-free will create a truly interoperable music marketplace. Apple will embrace this wholeheartedly.
This is despite accusations that Apple desires DRM as a way of locking consumers to iPod."
