+ - OS X Sales Surpass Windows Sales Internationally ->

Submitted by tubs
tubs writes "According to latest reports, Apple's OS X operating system is doing much better in international markets, such as Japan, than the United States. Quote: "The report went on to say that sales of OS X have outdone those of Windows for the first time in history, which is huge. Apparently Leopard gave the numbers just the right amount of push they needed to really start snowballing. In any case, six days after Leopard's launch in Japan, the sales took over 53.9 percent of the OS market. Perhaps this is a sign of greater things to happen in the US as well.""

Under upgraded legislation, he could face six months in jail and fines of up to $5,000 (£2,487) if found guilty,' the BBC reports."

Journal: Facebook Apps & Snuffs

Journal by LokiSnake

I finally began to try and build the Facebook app I wanted to do during summer math. Well, it's moving along fine. Still learning PHP and MySQL along the way. As I get a little more progress, I'll perhaps write more about it.

Oh, also, I find the Macintosh platform the best to do such things on. Panic's Transmit (FTP) + SubEthaEdit == heaven. I really want to get a new Mac now. The iBook is doing fine, but I wouldn't mind a little more.

Psychologist Explains Teens' Risky Decision-making Behavior->

From feed by sdfeed
Meg Gerrard will be the first to admit that unraveling the adolescent mind is not an easy thing. Like most parents, she's even asked her teen daughters, "What were you thinking?" after one of them was caught in a risky behavior. But now it's Gerrard -- an Iowa State University psychology professor -- who has tried to answer that question scientifically through analysis of research from the last 12 years on adolescent risk-taking.

Journal: Shark Sex Purely Optional

Journal by j.leidner
According to researchers from Ireland and the U.S., sharks don't need sex for reproduction. A lady shark in a zoo that provably had no sex produced a baby shark with "no paternal DNA" using a process known as "Parthenogenesis", the process that "occurs when an egg cell is triggered to develop as an embryo without the addition of any genetic material from a male sperm cell." The experiment publicized only today, was reportedly carrie

+ - How Low Cost PCs Are Harming Linux

Submitted by toms
toms writes "An article on MadPenguin.org discusses why low cost PCs are harming Linux and its reputation with beginners. From the article, "As much as I hate to say it, in some cases, yes. Low end PCs built with decent distribution did give some users ill feelings about Linux as a whole because they attributed their hardware woes to the unknown. Perhaps the saddest part of all of this is that many vendors are still doing this. To be kind, I'm not going to name names. I will allow pricing to prove my point instead. Again, I have no issues with PC sellers who wish to distribute Linux to those interested in using it, I'm just concerned about the sensitive branding that Linux (all distributions collectively) receives when someone runs out to purchase a really cheap machine."

+ - Is Ubuntu the Linux for Law Firms?

Submitted by hax0r_this
hax0r_this writes "Law.com is running a story questioning whether Ubuntu is the remedy to the Vista woes that law firms (like everyone else) are suffering. "To Vista or not to Vista; is that really the question? With Microsoft's long-awaited operating-system upgrade, well ... upon us ... it might be time to consider alternatives. Apple's fine Unix-based OS X is certainly an option, but if you're balking at investing in the new hardware you'll need to support Microsoft's new graphically seductive, resource-gobbling OS, do you really want to replace all your Windows machines with Macs?" The article touches on Ubuntu's plug and play abilities, criticizes its default color scheme and seems to conclude that "The feature of Ubuntu that is most likely to move this distro into the enterprise competitively is Canonicals' licensing model. The company does not impose a restriction on deploying a Linux enterprise subscription on every server. Instead, Ubuntu is free software licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL).""
