How Low Cost PCs Are Harming Linux

Submitted by toms
toms writes "An article on MadPenguin.org discusses why low cost PCs are harming Linux and its reputation with beginners. From the article, "As much as I hate to say it, in some cases, yes. Low end PCs built with decent distribution did give some users ill feelings about Linux as a whole because they attributed their hardware woes to the unknown. Perhaps the saddest part of all of this is that many vendors are still doing this. To be kind, I'm not going to name names. I will allow pricing to prove my point instead. Again, I have no issues with PC sellers who wish to distribute Linux to those interested in using it, I'm just concerned about the sensitive branding that Linux (all distributions collectively) receives when someone runs out to purchase a really cheap machine."

Is Ubuntu the Linux for Law Firms?

Submitted by hax0r_this
hax0r_this writes "Law.com is running a story questioning whether Ubuntu is the remedy to the Vista woes that law firms (like everyone else) are suffering. "To Vista or not to Vista; is that really the question? With Microsoft's long-awaited operating-system upgrade, well ... upon us ... it might be time to consider alternatives. Apple's fine Unix-based OS X is certainly an option, but if you're balking at investing in the new hardware you'll need to support Microsoft's new graphically seductive, resource-gobbling OS, do you really want to replace all your Windows machines with Macs?" The article touches on Ubuntu's plug and play abilities, criticizes its default color scheme and seems to conclude that "The feature of Ubuntu that is most likely to move this distro into the enterprise competitively is Canonicals' licensing model. The company does not impose a restriction on deploying a Linux enterprise subscription on every server. Instead, Ubuntu is free software licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL).""

Best way to learn how to draw?

Submitted by Anonymous Coward
An anonymous reader writes "I have always wanted to draw well, but being analytical and not really all that artistic I always get frustrated with my lack of success and quit. I've tried various tricks like copying a drawing upside down and "blind contour" drawing, but while my copies usually look fairly decent, my skills never seem to improve. Has anyone here overcome a similar barrier, and if so, do you have any tips you could share?"

What about a Request-Paying System on SourceForge?

Submitted by

blackorzar writes "What about a Request-Paying System on SourceForge?

I think that the next big-step on SourceForge could be a request-paying system for adding features on the projects it hosts.

I'm talking about that you can offer an author money to code a feature. It's about economics on Open Source and opening a model to get a revenue for what you code.
The goal is to make easy this process:
— You, the user, want a new feature
— You post your wish-list and includes that you want to pay x USD
— This kind of request arrives first to the code mantainer who can decide to make it himself or give it away
— The request goes to the top coders and they can decide to make it or give it away
— The request goes public and anyone can contact the one who required it
— If no one is interested (tell me... maybe I can do it for you jajaja)

— When this point is reached, the coder and the sponsor should come to an agreement on the payments, and the current funding system that is used by Sourceforge can help on this.
— One important thing to make this work is a grade system. I, the sponsor, can qualify a coder and the project: if it has all the features requested, if it was on time etc. On the other side, I, the coder, can qualify if the sponsor was clear, pay on time, change requests, etc. With this database you can have a better idea when you work with them on future projects. Also, by the open nature of the process, if there is a fighting between them then the community can be the judge... if the sponsor is asking something that is not on the original requirement or if the coder is giving a beast totally different from the one required everyone can read the requirement and see the result.

who will be interested to help on those conflicts? I think that anyone that wants to participate on the Request-Paying system: I would help because I want that this system works on me properly. Also, we have to consider the justice sense of the open source community.
— Finally Sourceforge should receive a percentage for the management tasks, hosting, etc.

What do you think? How to improve the rules of the game?"
