Professor's book explores benefits of copying

Submitted by Lazarian
Lazarian writes "York University professor Marcus Boone has released In Praise of Copying, a book available as a free download via the Harvard University Press website. Within is historical examples of copying, plagarism, and arguments which look at some beneficial aspects of free access to media. From the Edmonton Sun article... "That's why copying is rampant at universities. You have a huge group of young people who don't really have any money, who are very hungry for knowledge or fun or whatever it is and the idea that they should only have access to those things when they can afford to pay for it doesn't entirely make sense.""

Bono calls for controls over internet downloads

Submitted by Lazarian
Lazarian writes "Bono, lead singer of U2, called for measures to control downloads of movies, music, and other media. Director of National Hurricane Center Replaced

Submitted by
Lazarian
Lazarian writes "As previously discussed on Slashdot: Bill Proenza, acting as Director of the National Hurricane Center, had come under fire for raising concerns over the impending failure of a weather satellite. Stating that the loss of data from the failure of the QuickSCAT satellite would be detrimental to efforts to monitor hurricanes, along with expressing dismay at funding being used for PR purposes, his complaints resulted in friction within the organization and the NOAA. Mr. Proenza has now been placed on indefinite leave, his duties now being filled by Deputy chief Ed Rappaport."
