Well, I meant it like "shrinkage" (aka theft) is a cost of doing business in the retail industry. You put up with some small amount of theft because the cost of stopping it is more than the cost of your losses due to theft.

Sure, you could have 0 theft if you just locked the doors to your store and didn't let anyone in...but you'd go out of business press quick.

I have a grease-fire on my stove. Based on the fact that my house has historically not been on fire, I will do nothing about said grease-fire, and will legislate that everyone ignore experts' "wild fantasy predictions" that the house may indeed burn down.

This, plus other sermons the rabbi delivered, make me think that the ultra-orthodox live in fear that they are so weak-willed that they will give into desire/sin/whatever once the tiniest of opportunities present themselves. Thus, they make rules to prevent people from coming anywhere close to temptation.

Not to be rude, but that sounds almost *exactly* like Vulcan culture.

I've had T-Mobile since 2004 and I get just fine service almost everywhere.

Sure, if I'm waaaay out in the boonies I may be stuck with GPRS data, but I almost always have a signal to make a call.

Add on the fact that you can make/receive calls over wifi totally seamlessly and that makes it even better. When you're connected to wifi the phone will shut off its GSM radio and you save tons of battery life.

Yes, you're right. After all, visible-light is pretty damn high-frequency and it sucks at penetrating walls.

Visible light: 400 to 700 nm
Far Infrared: 15,000 nm to 1,000,000 nm
Regular wifi: 125,000,000 nm

I have no idea at what wavelength drywall and other modern building materials start seriously attenuating a signal (as in "only good for line-of-sight" attenuating). Anyone?
