Encrypted CCTV protects the innocent-> 1

Submitted by
Kugrian
Kugrian writes "3VR, a San Francisco based surveillance technology company has come up with a method of scrambling the images of anyone in CCTV film who is not a suspect. The technology uses 3VR's recently patented face-recognition algorithms to home in on known faces in crowds. An image-scrambling algorithm then blurs the faces and bodies of those who are not of interest and encrypts the blur pattern so that no one but the operator of the technology can unscramble it."

US Nuclear sub crashes into US Navy vessel->

Submitted by
Kugrian
Kugrian writes "Showing that it's not just the British and the French who have trouble seeing each other on the high seas, a US Nuclear submarine yesterday crashed into a US Navy heavy cruiser. The USS Hartford, a nuclear-powered attack submarine, was submurged as it crashed into the USS New Orleans in the strait of Hormuz, resulting in the spillage of 95,000 litres of diesel fuel. Both vessels were heading in the same direction when the collision occurred in the narrow strait and were subsequently heading to port for repairs. A spokesman for the 5th Fleet said that the USS Hartford suffered no damage to its nuclear propulsion system."

Presidential helicopter schematics leaking via P2P->

Submitted by
Kugrian
Kugrian writes "Internet security company Tiversa has discovered a security breach that led to the transfer of military information to an Iranian IP address. WPXI (a NBC affiliate in Pittsburgh) quoted the company's CEO, Bob Boback, who said Tiversa found a file containing the entire blueprints and avionics package for Marine One. "What appears to be a defense contractor in Bethesda, Md., had a file-sharing program on one of their systems that also contained highly sensitive blueprints for Marine One." Tiversa makes products that monitor the sharing of files online. A representative for the company was not immediately available for comment. Boback believes that the files probably were transferred through a peer-to-peer file-sharing network such as LimeWire or BearShare, then compromised."

First Ever Photo Tour of Defcon's Network Center

Submitted by
Kugrian
Kugrian writes "With over 9,000 hackers, freaks, fed and geeks attending Defcon 20, the temporary wireless network setup there is considered the most hostile on the planet. Run by a dedicated group of volunteers known as Goons, the basement Defcon Network Operations Center is secured by means of a chain-link fence and armed guard. The 20 megabit connection, which is twice as fast as Defcon 15, runs over a point-to-point wireless link to another hotel that has point-of-presence in their basement. Wired's Threat Level blog managed to secure the first ever photo tour of the Center showing Goons, hardware and sniffer dogs."

Office Open XML out of Microsoft's hands-> 1

Submitted by
Kugrian
Kugrian writes "A couple of weeks ago, ISO members voted to make Microsoft's Office Open XML format an official standard. The ISO has now taken official control of the format and has put it under the aegis of the same Joint Technical Committee responsible for the OpenDocument Format. Now no longer the sold arbiter of how OOXML develops, Microsoft may well find itself in the position of making ISO-mandated changes to Microsoft Office as a result of the ISO's deliberations."

Domain-Name Squatter Demands Job at Google->

Submitted by
Kugrian
Kugrian writes "A German network administrator who cyber-squatted at least eight Google-related domain names, has demanded a job at Google in exchange for handing over ownership of the domains. Sebastian Klein, 27, posted an open letter to Google in 10 languages on each of the sites saying that he would relinquish the domain addresses for free if he got a job offer in return. In a letter, he said "Hi Google, I would not like to keep these domains, earn also no money with it. I return it to you immediately free of charge. All I seek for is a job at Google.""
