Another great post by Shaun is this one:

A (Nearly) Bulletproof Web Design & Development Project Checklist for clients and designers.

If you're aiming to agree a fixed price for the development of the website, as we do, ensure the project goes smoothly before you start, by communicating with your client at the outset.

Journal Journal: Absolute Positioning in a CMS

So, my co-worker, people person in IT was contacted today about an issue in our CMS. They could not click any of the buttons or tabs in the CMS on just one Article. It worked everywhere else but the one article. My co-worker looked at it, but could not figure it out, so he passed it on to me.

So I logged in to look at it. Weird. Very very weird.

Journal Journal: Long time.. LOL 1

Well, I still reign as conversion queen. I still get assigned all the conversions.. and guess what?

Submission + - Will a postcard make it to Google Kansas? (

Kris_B_04 writes: The mayor of Topeka Kansas has changed the city's name to Google, Kansas ââ the capital city of fiber optics for the month of March. The mayor did it "to convince Google to make Topeka a test site for an ultrafast Internet connection."
Now, the world has a hold of the idea.
Are we a laughing stock or ingenious?
And most importantly, will we be able to receive mail addressed to Google Kansas?

First Beta of Opera 10 Released 278

Miladinoski writes "Opera Software ASA today released the first beta of their tenth version of the Opera browser. In addition to the browser's known features, like mouse gestures, keyboard shortcuts, voice navigation, mail and RSS support, speed dial and so forth, it now includes a Turbo mode which unclogs your connection to get faster browsing, a new interface, a tabbed browsing update and customizable speed dial. Opera 10 continues to follow the web standards by getting 100/100 and pixel-perfect scores on the Acid3 test. The beta is currently available for every modern OS platform."

Microsoft Confirms October 22 Release Date For Windows 7 182

techwrench was one of several readers to send word that Microsoft has officially announced Windows 7 will be generally available on October 22nd. They also mentioned the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program: "This program enables participating retailers and OEMs to offer a special deal to upgrade to Windows 7 for customers purchasing a qualifying PC. I'll be doing another blog post about this program with a date and more details when we get closer to availability. Obviously, Release To Manufacturing (RTM) is an important milestone on the path to GA. We anticipate that we'll be able to make the RTM code for Windows 7 available to our partners sometime in the 2nd half of July. We also expect to be able to make RTM code for Windows Server 2008 R2 available to our partners in this time frame as well."

Submission + - Tomorrow is Computer Shutdown Day! Can YOU do it?

Kris_B_04 writes: Tomorrow (May 3) is Shutdown Day. Can you do it? Is it really possible to go 24 hours without technology anymore?

"Shutdown Day is a Global Internet Experiment whose purpose is to get people to think about how their lives have changed with the increasing use of the home computer, and whether or not any good things are being lost because of this.

"The idea of Shutdown Day project is simple — just shutdown your computer for one whole day of the year and involve yourself in some other activities: outdoors, nature, sports, fun stuff with friends and family — whatever, just to remind yourself that there still exists a world outside your monitor screen.

"Michael Taylor, the original partner in the idea of Shutdown Day, says 'I certainly could not and would not want to live without my computer. However, I am often drawn into spending hours chatting on MSN, simply because my friends are online instead of socialising face to face. I am often too busy to cook a proper dinner, because I want to see the latest news on or the latest YouTube video. I know parents who are so addicted to the computer that they spend little time with their children, and I also know children who do not spend time with their parents because they are always using the computer. We are not preaching to anyone to turn off their computers. We are just suggesting that people might like to take part in this experiment, and see what happens.'"

Submission + - Slashdotter Psychopaths (

Kris_B_04 writes: "Many potential psychopaths might not even realize they have the condition, nor has there traditionally been any easy way for others to recognize them."

I wonder how many /. people are psychopaths because of all the "FIRST POST" comments submitted.. *grin* After all, that is one of the questions on the quiz, Pseudo-Scientific Psychopath Detector, found in the article, The Unburdened Mind

Journal Journal: Conversion Queen 2

My boss called me the Conversion Queen.. and then promptly gave me 3 more conversions.. LOL

Ah well... kinda cool in a way. Good thing I love playing with Databases.. *grin*

I finished the Herb Companion conversion. It went fairly smoothly. Grit is supposed to be next, but they haven't gotten me the data to convert yet!

In between, I've been working on a contest page, forums, event registrations and various errors that have popped up.

Submission + - Breathalyzed? Ask for the source code! (

stevedcc writes: "Anandtech are running an article about a Minnesota man who is asking for the breathlyzer source code as part of his defence against a drunk driving charge. From the article:

One of the common criticisms (which is also made of voting machines) of breath devices is that the "state-certified" models are updated even after they are certified. The companies that manufacture the machines make tweaks, bug fixes, and even add new features, but the machines are not generally recertified after every single source code change. This means that any given machine could potentially be running non-certified code, code which may or may not have errors.....As a bonus, if a company proves unwilling to turn over the code, the case often gets thrown out without any need to prove that the source code is in fact flawed.

Submission + - Russia sparks Cold War scramble

Gearoid_Murphy writes: bbc has a story about US jet fighters being scrambled to meet Russion Tu-95 turboprops, something that hasn't been done since the cold war. This coincides with recent reports from Georgia about a Russian missile found on their territory, reportedly fired by a Russian jet tracked by radar as well as the recent diplomatic tiff that occured between Russia and Britain over the murder of a former Russian spy in London from radioactive poisoning with iostopes that identified it as coming from a specific Russian reactor. Whats with the Russians all of sudden?, I thought we were getting along just fine.

Feel disillusioned? I've got some great new illusions, right here!
