MarkWhittington writes "Mitt Romney has infamously suggested that the idea of lunar colonies is "zany" and his ridiculed Newt Gingrich's idea of building a lunar base by 2020. However Romney has been endorsed by a group of aerospace heavyweights, including Apollo moonwalker Gene Cernan and former NASA administrator Mike Griffin, many of whom have previously supported the idea of lunar bases."

Righthaven Redux... With a Difference->

Submitted by Capt.Albatross
Capt.Albatross writes "At Boing Boing, Rob Beschizza reports that, in an act of delicious irony, Swiss ISP Ort Cloud [sic] has acquired Righthaven's domain name and has relaunched Righthaven.com as a web hosting service diametrically opposed to the practices of its original owner, a notorious but ultimately unsuccessful copyright troll. The new owners, in partnership with first amendment lawyer Marc Randazza (who was instrumental in the original Rigthhaven's demise), promise "infrajuridsictional infrastructure" — uptime that would require international cooperation to bring down. "Frivolous plaintiffs will find little comfort here" says Ort Cloud's Stefan Thalberg.

The domain name became available in a court-ordered auction of Righthaven LLC's assets, to pay its creditors."

Ask Slashdot: Cell phone and PC interaction for te

Submitted by abell
abell writes "Last year a young man I know had an accident which left him without the use of the four limbs. He only has very limited movement of one arm (but not of his hands).
In order for him to have some social interaction, not limited to visitors who drop by during visit hours, I was thinking of a way for him to use a cell phone: something along the ways of speakers and a mic and possibly a way to start and reply calls with voice commands or at most by pushing a single button, which would need to be installed in his bed by his side and not be so obtrusive as to hinder the nurses' job.
If he were also able in a near future to use a PC with internet connection I think his life quality would improve considerably.
Do you fellow slashdotters have any experience on such setups and any advice to share?
How could one avoid the audio feedback between the speakers and the mic, which would probably need to be in a fixed position at some distance?
Would the cell phone setup be possible to build with cheap off-the-shelf components?
How about a PC interface he might be able to use?
For any location-specific advice, I should specify that my friend is in Poland."

Yammer Moving from Scala to Java->

twofishy writes "Yammer is moving from Scala to Java, after finding in a year-long experiment that the benefits provided by writing in a terser language don't outweigh the benefits of the complexities in having to train new employees and debugging performance problems. The email also suggests a number of performance improvements that can be made by avoiding certain patterns."

Comment: An Australian DST time zone border-sitter (Score 1) 359

I have the benefit/detriment of living on the cusp of a timezone, the NSW/QLD imaginary border, which an hour apart. There are benefits of course; the banks and stores are open an hour later in QLD of an afternoon. My work (invariably over the border) means I can sleep in for another hour, yet means I get home later.

Everybody you talk to refers to either NSW or QLD time, as it's the nightmare we face six months of the year - many an appointment is missed as you arrive an hour late, or the annoyance of an hour early.

QLD had a governmental enquiry into adopting NSW daylight savings time, which was accepted by the Southern QLD population, but was defeated by the Northern, as they didn't want their curtains to be bleached, nor their cows to be confused by the extra hour of sunshine. I kid you not, that was their reasoning.

I come from a somewhat rural background, yet shudder to think of the idiocy behind that.

OpenDisc launched->

ChrisGray writes "The OpenDisc project is a collection of high quality open source software aimed at Microsoft Windows users, regularly updated and freely distributable as a CD. It saves them money on otherwise costly proprietary software, but more importantly promotes Linux uptake amongst users who may have not been exposed to OSS before. I started the project after eighteen months spent as Project Lead for Canonical's TheOpenCD, during which I found numerous problems impeding further development, which I've expanded on at length on my blog. The latest version is available at SourceForge."
