This recent article about Wireless Industry Cozying Up To the Disruptors talks about putting PC and TV Applications on mobile phones, which are not limited to today's current scope, but a flow blown set of new products that will support everything you can get in your home. The biggest tidbit of news comes from the statement "This could turn the U.S. wireless industry on its head. The advent of mobile access to full-blown home PC and TV applications could lead to a revamp in pricing of wireless service providers' data plans, possibly to tiered pricing..."
Talking about revamping the current wireless data pricing grid hits something very close to home for anyone who uses data in a professional environment. People use data, data costs money, how do you turn a profit with millions of subscribers who will be using an insane about of data usage (potentially) to do streaming high quality video and television on their mobile devices?
The people who have such abilities now, Amp'd and MobiTV among others that are buzz words in Canada, are just examples of someone pushing the services out to the masses to see how many people grab at it. Usually aimed for the younger crowds. These are offered as "features" or add-on bundles included with other services like caller-id and voicemail. They have calculated the quantity of programs available, how much it costs, added them into a bundle and hope that people grab onto it.
What if someone can access something without their bundles. Using data plans are very cheap in North America compared to those prices in Europe where they have a flat rate data fee. In North America we have a similar flat-rate ideal, but we use data a lot differently than European Nations where mobile data communications is second nature. We in the west have not yet come out of diapers, so to speak.
My thoughts go towards, what if all Bandwidth around the world becomes free, goverment paid for access to any high speed internet line. Would the company's still charge for something they get for free? Probably... But, if they didn't and everybody else decided that information access would be free for anyone to use responsibly. Imagine...
What kind of processes and events would have to take place for such a massive world altering event to take place? Who would be angry at its conception? Who would revell in it? Predictions are futile but... if you could see it happening, then how long do you think it would take? My futile prediction is at least 50 years giving the current state of the world. I don't forsee it happening unless some major catastrophic world event happens to bring us all together and realize that information sharing is needed at that level."
