EVE Players Worried Over Leaked CCP Magazine->

Submitted by Jupix
Jupix writes "Right on the heels of "Incarna", the most impressive technical expansion of EVE Online since 2007's "Trinity", the player community has been buzzing over the leaked latest issue of an internal CCP magazine, "Fearless: Greed Is Good". In it are some startling revelations of movement towards a microtransactions-based business model for EVE and other upcoming CCP games like World of Darkness. In the Fearless article, Kristoffer Touborg alias CCP Soundwave, Game Designer for EVE at CCP, writes: "I would like virtual goods sales in EVE. In fact, I'd like to sell a lot more than vanity items. Does this mean I'm an evil capitalist that, unless stopped, will cause the entire company to catch fire and be buried at sea by a secret team of Navy SEALs? Let's hope not, although that's the impression I get sometimes when interacting with our customers." For years now, the EVE community has been extremely vocal in opposition of microtransactions, opting for a subscription fee that is slightly above those of its competitors. With last Tuesday's "Incarna" expansion, CCP rolled out a microtransactions-based vanity item store."

OpenTTD features dozens of big new features over the game that inspired it, like huge maps, large-scale multiplayer, customizable graphics, an online content delivery system, in addition to hundreds of little improvements and gameplay improvements. The most important feature of them all in recent versions has been the ability to run the game completely stand-alone, without the data files from Transport Tycoon."

Nokia Sues Apple, says iPhone infringes on patents->

Submitted by Jupix
Jupix writes "News have just broke that Nokia has sued Apple for multiple patent infringements, concerning 10 Nokia patents on several wireless technologies, GSM, UMTS and WLAN. From their press release: "The ten patents in suit relate to technologies fundamental to making devices which are compatible with one or more of the GSM, UMTS (3G WCDMA) and wireless LAN standards. The patents cover wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption and are infringed by all Apple iPhone models shipped since the iPhone was introduced in 2007." I suppose this is one way for Nokia to try and beat Apple on turf which has traditionally been dominated by Nokia."

Players Furious Over Buggy GTA IV PC Release

Submitted by
Jupix
Jupix writes "It took Rockstar over 3 quarters of a year to port Grand Theft Auto IV to the PC, and while they claim this was because they wanted polish and quality with their GTA PC release, it appears the result has been less than satisfactory. Players all over the internet are furious over numerous bugs in the release, ranging from nonfunctional internet registration and graphics glitches to completely inoperative installations. One of the game's largest retailers, Steam, has reportedly gone so far as to start handing out refunds to hordes of unsatisfied (and no doubt uncomfortably noisy) customers."

ASUS and Intel launch collaborative PC design site->

Submitted by
Jupix
Jupix writes "There's an interesting new community by ASUS and Intel, called WePC. It enables anyone to post their dream PC including not only function, but form as well. You can draw up your dream and describe it in words, and also fiddle with some predetermined properties. No doubt the two companies are looking for common configurations so they can implement them in future products, but according to the press release, even individual designs may get the two companies' backing."

Ghanaian Newspaper Runs Mobile Phone Urban Legend->

Submitted by
Jupix
Jupix writes "There's a funny news item at a Ghanaian newspaper, "Modern Ghana", warning readers of answering their mobile phones while the phone is being charged. Apparently there was an accident where a young man was killed by an electric shock from his mobile, which he accidentally answered while it was being charged. "After a few seconds electricity flowed into the cell phone unrestrained and the young man was thrown to the ground with a heavy thud", the news item describes the events that led to the man's death. There is no mention of how electric current found its way through the plastic casing of the cellphone. Naturally, we geeks know this story as the Snopes-documented urban legend "Overcharged"."

Jupix writes "Nokia has decided to offer their smart2go navigation software as a free download starting February 10th. From TFA: "Nokia plans to start offering the smart2go application for free, on Saturday, February 10th, for selected Nokia S60 and Windows Mobile 5.0 devices initially and has plans to roll out support for most of the major mobile OS platforms including Nokia S60, Series 40, PocketPC, Linux and other Windows Mobile devices." This is good news especially for Windows Mobile 5.0 smartphone users as up until now there has been a real shortage of good navigation software for that platform."

Vista to be the fastest adopted OS ever?

Submitted by
Jupix
Jupix writes "Infoworld has an interesting article citing a software analyst about Windows Vista. He says, "Up to 15 percent of PC users will move to Vista within the first year that the operating system is available. That would make it the fastest-moving operating system ever." He also goes on to say Office 2007 will spread considerably slower than Vista."
