Major UK ISPs Blacklist Wikipedia 1

Submitted by
Jonnty
Jonnty writes "Wikipedia has been put on a blacklist of theInternet Watch Foundation, a UK body which gives ISPs lists of sites they reckon ought to be blocked. While UK users can still browse Wikipedia, they're now doing it through about 10 proxy servers, causing havoc among the community as innocent users are blocked over the actions of vandals hundreds of miles away. According to Wikinews, it's all a result of an album cover by the Scorpions featuring a naked ten year old girl, which has caused controversy in the past. However, it certainly raises questions about whether the IWF is compent enough to hold such power — it looks like they've blocked Rapidshare in the past, too."

Section_Ei8ht writes "Spanish Congress has made it a civil offense to download anything via p2p networks, and a criminal offense for ISP's to allow users to file-share, even if the use is fair. There is also to be a tax on all forms of blank media, including flash memory drives. I guess the move towards distributing films legally via BitTorrent is a no go in Spain." Here is our coverage of the tax portion of this law.

The focus of this effort seems to be in addressing local franchising authorities' current bias towards incumbents. He also talks about current congressional efforts to enact national franchise legislation."

Roberto writes "Gorgeous nerd Annalee Newitz hacked a political interpretation to recent vacuum cleaner cockfights at O'Reilly's ETech: 'Hollywood corporations have finally admitted that the real reason they built digital restriction management (DRM) software into PVRs and DVD players was to stop geeks from turning their recording devices into back-alley combat machines. You haven't seen ugly until you've watched what a DVD player without DRM can do to a TiVo.' Don't try to even think of this at home."
