Microsoft Raises $3.8B in Bond Sale 437

pfleming writes "Microsoft quietly, or not so quietly, raised some cheap cash in bond sales yesterday. For a company that already has a huge cash war chest and doesn't carry debt, what is the incentive to sell nearly $4 billion in bonds? From the article: 'Microsoft is sitting on $25 billion in cash, so the company doesn't need the bond proceeds "unless they have something big in mind," says Reena Aggarwal, professor of finance at Georgetown University's McDonough School of Business.'"

Teacher Sells Ads On Tests 532

Posted by samzenpus
from the pay-the-bills dept.
Tom Farber, a calculus teacher at Rancho Bernardo high school in San Diego, has come up with a unique way of covering district cuts to his supplies budget. He sells ads on his tests. "Tough times call for tough actions," Tom says. The price of an ad on a Mr. Farber Calc test is as follows: $10 for a quiz, $20 for a chapter test, and $30 for a semester final. Most of the ads are messages from parents but about a third of them come from local businesses. Principal Paul Robinson says reaction has been "mixed," but adds, "It's not like, 'This test is brought to you by McDonald's or Nike.'" I see his point. Being a local business whore is much better than being a multinational conglomerate whore.

New Board Members Chosen for Yahoo

Submitted by JerkyBoy
JerkyBoy writes "Yahoo is reported to have approved "the appointments of former Viacom CEO Frank Biondi and former Nextel Partners CEO John Chapple to its board." The appointments occurred days before the scheduled shareholder meeting of August 1. It appears that Icahn's attempt to replace the entire board at Yahoo was met with only partial success. Icahn is now on the board, as well as the two aforementioned appointees. One wonders what it would be like to be in Steve Ballmer's shoes these days... Don't throw that chair, Steve!"

AMD Improves ATI OpenGL Support for Linux

Submitted by JerkyBoy
JerkyBoy writes "A press release from AMD describes improvements to the ATI graphics cards for OpenGL on Linux. From the article: "AMD today announced new ATI Catalyst(TM) drivers with major performance enhancements to ATI FireGL(TM) professional graphics cards. Availability of this enhanced 8.49.7 Linux driver represents a significant leap for Linux customers seeking improved performance of CAD and digital content creation applications that can offer up to approximately 33 percent faster OpenGL performance than the previous driver." Linux support for NVIDIA cards seems lightyears ahead of the ATI cards, but maybe ATI (AMD) is finally taking Linux development seriously."

Journal: FreeBSD vs. Linux

Journal by JerkyBoy
Coincidental to the two articles on FreeBSD today, I set up two FreeBSD machines at home. One server, and the other desktop. All of the problems that I'd had with FreeBSD have gone, and I'm in love with this OS. Here are some improvements:
  • Mozilla and Firefox fonts: fixed (set these to your machine settings in the preferences)
  • Postgresql, Apache2, and PHP: setup was a breeze
  • Documentation: The FreeBS

Finality is death. Perfection is finality. Nothing is perfect. There are lumps in it.
