I was just in Beijing for a month in July and my China Mobile SIM cost about 30 RMB (about $5 USD). I loaded it with 100 RMB initially (about $16 USD) which essentially lasted my entire month. Minutes are ridiculously cheap. Contrary to what people are saying here, data plans are actually fairly expensive with 1GB costing around $10 USD... I opted out of a data plan while I was there because it really was exorbitantly priced.

Unfortunately damming a river carries with it huge environment drawbacks to the surrounding area such as the destruction of wildlife habitat and the damage to fish runs. I like the idea of hydropower, I just don't like how it's been implemented in many cases. A reduction in CO2 emissions at the expense of the local ecology should never be an easy choice. It may be justifiable in some cases, but isn't something to be taken lightly.

Going back to school for the first time in 10 years on the 3rd, I just bought a small netbook specifically for classroom use. I don't expect to get a lot of use out of it for my math classes since it's rather difficult to jot down free-form math formulas and quickly draw angles and such, but I do expect to get a lot of use out of it for my writing class. Honestly I think it really depends on the class. I can think of a ton of legitimate uses of my computer in most classes such as recording the class lecture; however I can see how it could be horribly distracting to other students who aren't accustomed to it. I personally think it's up to each individual student to make the best of the classroom experience though regardless of whatever environmental distractions there may be. I know I wasn't ready to go to school 10 years ago which is why I've waited until now; I had a few life lessons I needed to learn first. Frankly I wouldn't be opposed to cutting of internet access while in class though... Of course, this is all just my opinion which is subject to change if I find it doesn't suite me after I've actually started school...

Going back to school for the first time in ten years, I just purchased a small little netbook specifically for classroom use. I don't know how effective it will be in my math classes since drawing graphs and jotting down formulas is impossible to do quickly with a keyboard and mouse, but I expect to get a lot of use out of it for my writing classes. I also hope to record class lectures to it if the professors are ok with it. I think it really depends on the class and the subject matter. I can think of a ton of responsible ways to use my laptop while in most classes, but I can also see how horribly distracting even legitimate use could be to someone who's not accustomed to it. The article definitely raises some valid concerns, but ultimately, I think it's up to the student to take responsibility for their own learning. Environmental factors can certainly be an influence in how easy it is to learn in a given environment, but it really is up to the student to make the best of it regardless of what else may be going on around them. I wouldn't be against cutting off internet access while in class though... Of course, that is my current opinion, which is subject to change if I find that it just doesn't work for me...

Microsoft

Vista SP1, XP SP3 Leaked.->

Sniper223 writes "It's probably very safe to say that Microsoft's two upcoming service packs are the most eagerly-awaited products due to ship out of Microsoft's camp anytime soon, at least as far as most end-users are concerned..

Windows XP SP3 has been through the (rumor) mill for a couple of years of now, with enough fake leaks and "this-is-what-it's-going-to-be" downloads plaguing the net for quite a long time. Most people looking forward to Windows XP SP3 are hoping to get that last bit of performance boost and maybe a reliability update or two — and to resolve a couple of outstanding issues that have been patched but never officially released; addressing some software issues, chronic bugs, and hidden nasties. But, for the most part, Windows XP SP3 is intended to wrap those hundreds of patches, hotfixes, and security releases that have been released since Windows XP SP2 first made it's (much-welcomed) presence known on August 6th, 2004.

Windows Vista SP1, though, is — without a doubt — what's on everyone's minds today. Ever since the fiasco (a.k.a. Vista RTM) that was pre-maturely (yet after much delay) released on November 8th, 2006; Windows Vista has been plagued with endless issues from terrible hibernation support, FireWire issues, HD-Audio problems, unexpected crashes and reboots, incredibly slow I/O and LAN activity, buggy UAC, and a lot, lot more.

Since November of last year, Microsoft has been steadily fixing bugs and addressing performance and reliability issues it encountered as they work up to the release of Windows Longhorn Server. In our own testing, some these patches are of the utmost importance to reliability and performance, enabling users to actually use the sleep features of Windows Vista, listen to audio the way they like, and be able to — at the very minimum — browse their LAN without suffering fateful explorer.exe crashes. However, like all other patches and hotfixes unofficially released on support.microsoft.com, they weren't recommended for general use — mostly due to incomplete regression testings and possible conflicts with certain setups.

But now both Windows Vista SP1 and Windows XP SP3 betas have been leaked to the online world, just a couple of days apart. First it was Windows XP SP3 build 3180, and now it's Windows Vista SP1 build 6001 (both are alpha/beta builds and to be treated as such!). And, of course, two big questions:

      1. When will the official public/private beta begin for these two service packs? And the official release?
      2. How did these leaks happen? And by Whom?

To the casual viewer, it would seem these are just two big mistakes that Microsoft is probably bashing its head against the wall because of, but when you get down to it: just how likely is it that the two most valuable products still in development and without a single official release would leak to the internet just days apart? Especially when the Windows Vista build ships as a time-bombed release, it makes us wonder: Is Microsoft really in the practice of time-bombing internal development releases that only exist in the hands of people who have access to hourly builds?

The obvious answer is no. Either these were private builds intended for redistribution outside of Microsoft or they were part of a very smart plan: Leak it. Get the (unofficial) response. Get a real beta out. Vista has been under scrutiny and criticism far more than any past version of Windows — Microsoft cannot afford for SP1 to be a flop, even in early beta form. So they "put out" an unofficial version, get the unofficial response, and fix the soon-to-be-nonexistent bugs. Then they release the beta and prepare for world domination er, system stability.

It's just way too big of a coincidence to be one: two leaks in 3 days? For the two most high-profile projects currently going on in Microsoft's camp? Especially since the only people getting their hands on the initial releases outside of Microsoft are people Microsoft wants to keep happy and they want to keep Microsoft happy too: nVidia, ATi/AMD, Intel, and a chosen few software producers. Plus, there most definitely is a chain-of-custody for these builds, and it wouldn't take long to find out who leaked it — if it wasn't part of Microsoft's plan for this to happen.

Microsoft's been in the business of keeping things officially secret for a while now, keeping all official information about XP SP3 and Vista SP1 tightly under wraps — but that doesn't mean they (or someone at Microsoft) doesn't want the public to know — after all, this is the kind of news that gets those stocks up, makes people think more-highly of Windows, and most importantly, gives Microsoft a chance to right a big wrong.

At any rate, whether this leak was part of Microsoft's master-plan for spreading Vista around and quelling the rather many uprisings since Vista RTM or if it was really just an (dis)honest leak; we're in the process of reviewing this pre-Beta SP1 release and we'll let you know what we find as soon as we're ready."

iPhone Bill a Whopping 52 Pages Long 369

PoliTech writes "iPhone bills are surprisingly large - 'Xbox Large', according to Ars technica: 'AT&T's iPhone bills are quite impressive in their own right. We're starting to get bills for the iPhone here at Ars, and while many of us have had smartphones for some time, we've never seen a bill like this. One of our bills is a whopping 52 pages long, and my own bill is 34 pages long. They're printed on both sides, too. What gives? The AT&T bill itemizes your data usage whenever you surf the Internet via EDGE, even if you're signed up for the unlimited data plan. AT&T also goes into an incredible amount of detail to tell you; well, almost nothing. For instance, I know that on July 27 at 3:21 p.m. I had some data use that, under the To/From heading, AT&T has helpfully listed as Data Transfer. The Type of file? Data. My total charge? $0.00. This mind-numbing detail goes on for 52 double-sided pages (for 104 printed pages!) with absolutely no variance except the size of the files.' You would think that a data company would have a more efficient billing process."

When Microsoft tells you 'try-before-you-buy,' the 'buy' part is not meant to be an option. Once you 'try' a Microsoft 'upgrade' you can not easily go back, because your files will be replaced by new versions that you need the new software to read." The ChannelRegister article also notes how Microsoft's push goes against the grain of the consumer revolt against "crapware." I fucking hate portuguese language because i don't get it's point!!! not the people you know what? my friend just bought a Laptop HP Pavillion 1200 totally in portuguese, and i setted it up.. then i call to HP support, i ask them if i can go to any store and change the CD of WINDOWS to any other in spanish.. They say me, no but you can call a technician and ask him to install the spanish version, but you will not receive any support of the software you have. Then i ask the support guy, how it is possible to receive no support, if the laptop goes broken, who the fuck might be guilty? The software of me?.. either of them they don't fucking care, why? because the hardware has no warraty either with an unwarranted software so i have to let it in portuguese better if the laptop breaks or just have deffects or bugs. What a hell i think, even if the damn hardware is failed, the only way to realize that is by using a foreign language with a foreigh system that really works different and not because of the language, but some of the interfaces are just different. Interesting point. If you break it in spanish, you are doomed, If you break it in portuguese, you are doomed too, but at least you might get some support to break it the best."

Problems with the "Paperless Voting" bill->

doom writes "Are you excited to hear that Congress is going to vote on a bill to ban paperless voting? Well I was, and Move On clearly is, but if there are election reform advocates that tell a different story: Bev Harris: Is a flawed bill better than no bill?: "the Holt Bill provides for a paper trail (toilet paper roll-style records affixed to DRE voting machines) in 2008, requires more durable ballots in 2010, and requires a complex set of audits. It also cements and further empowers a concentration of power over elections under the White House, gives explicit federal sanction to trade secrets in vote counting, mandates an expensive 'text conversion' device that does not yet exist which is not fully funded, and removes 'safe harbor' for states in a way that opens them up to unlimited, expensive, and destabilizing litigation. " Steve Freeman: Snatching Defeat from the Jaws of Victory "Today, the Holt bill faces a 'fast track' vote in Congress. Essentially this means an up or down vote on a terrible bill, rather than an opportunity to speak in the nation's most important forum about what may well be the greatest threat to democracy in the history of the republic.""

Voting Machines Not To Blame In Florida

Submitted by
InternetVoting
InternetVoting writes "The final report from Florida's Secretary of State and an audit from an independent team led by Florida State University have reach the same conclusion that voting machines are not to blame for the 18,000 missing votes in Sarasota county. The Secretary of State's report found "no evidence to suggest or conclude that the official certified election results did not reflect the actual votes cast" and the 8 member independent audit team unanimously decided the voting machines "did not cause or contribute to the CD13 undervote." However, the losing candidate has responded that the audit "contained several critical flaws" and Princeton Professor Ed Felton has said "I think the jury is still out on whether voting machine malfunctions could be a significant cause of the undervotes.""
