Submitted by
JRiddell
JRiddell writes "Kubuntu, the KDE flavour from Ubuntu, has found a new sponsor in Blue Systems. They will be providing more resources than were available by previous sponsor Canonical. The project will remain much the same, community led, KDE focused, Ubuntu flavour. With the new independence it can branch out into new markets such as a Kubuntu Active flavour for tablets."

Qt To Be Relicensed As LGPL

Submitted by
JRiddell
JRiddell writes "Nokia are relicencing Qt under the LGPL. This change will make it easier for commercial developers to use Qt and should mean more support for KDE from vendors. "The move to LGPL licensing will provide open source and commercial developers with more permissive licensing than GPL and so increase flexibility for developers. In addition, Qt source code repositories will be made publicly available and will encourage contributions from desktop and embedded developer communities. With these changes, developers will be able to actively drive the evolution of the Qt framework.""

KDE 4.0 Release Starts Something Amazing

Submitted by
JRiddell
JRiddell writes "Several years of design, development and testing came together today for the release of KDE 4.0. This is our most significant release in our 11 year history and marks both the end of the long and intensive development cycle leading up to KDE 4.0 and the start of the KDE 4 era. Join us now in #kde4-release-party on Freenode to celebrate or come to the release event in person next week. Packages are available for all the major distributions with live CDs available currently from Kubuntu and openSUSE. Take the KDE 4.0 Visual Guide to find your way around."

Full Mac OS X Support in KDE

Submitted by
JRiddell
JRiddell writes "KDE Dot News is reporting that KDE is going native for Mac OS X users. 'Just because KDE has been designed to be portable across Linux, FreeBSD and other UNIX/X11 environments for an age now, doesn't mean we aren't up for the occasional challenge. With version 4, Trolltech released Qt for the Mac, Windows and now even embedded environments under the GPL. Since Qt is the base upon which KDE is developed, KDE is now free to offer native support for these platforms.' The article also discusses some of the branding clarifications needed as a result of this port."

Nothing in progression can rest on its original plan. We may as well think of rocking a grown man in the cradle of an infant. -- Edmund Burke
