beuges writes "General Motors researchers are working on a high-tech windshield that users lasers and infra-red sensors to identify and enhance important objects for older drivers with vision problems. 'For example, during a foggy drive, a laser projects a blue line onto the windshield that follows the edge of the road. Or if infrared sensors detect a person or animal in the driver's path during a night drive, its outline is projected on the windshield to highlight its location.' And it's not only older drivers who will benefit: 'Some features would be helpful to drivers of all ages. If a driver is speeding, a pink box frames an approaching speed limit sign to draw the driver's attention.' The 65 and older population in the US will nearly double in about 20 years, meaning more people will be struggling to see the road like they used to."

"I hate to say it, but the web has outlived it's usefulness anyway. Any idiot can create a website, Any idiot can post anonymously and any idiot can freely distribute kiddie porn as a result. Let's face it, the web is an outdated system that is primarily abused. Anything accomplished on the web can be done elsewhere faster, cheaper and better. Sure, the pedo crowd can still find ways to trade, but the web makes it too easy to hook up. Killing the web won't kill kiddie porn, but it makes it more difficult. Does anyone really give a crap if the web disappears? Seriously?"

Just replace "usenet", "the web", with just about any networking technology and your statement still has the same meaning. Where does it end?

I prefer SPF 60. It allows me to keep the pasty white, computer nerd complexion that drives the women wild.

An anonymous reader writes "The Jace Hall Show launched today on Sony's Crackle with a real gameplay preview of Duke Nukem Forever. Jace Hall is a former video game producer and Warner Bros exec and apparently this is his foray into online celebrity. DNF is 12 years in development ... it might be real after all." And if you have had enough self-indulgent gaming-news patter, another reader says "If you want to simply skip right ahead, it's about 4:20 in."

Why BitTorrent causes network bandwidth to be used. And network packets to be sent & received. Really sometimes I wonder.

Component Video Preferred Over HDMI For Installers[->] 2008-04-17 11:55 Anonymous Coward

Submitted by Anonymous Coward on Thursday April 17, @11:55AM
An anonymous reader writes "HDMI has had a lot of backlash, from its content protection schemes to the different versions and variations. So much so that most custom installers prefer using component video cabling instead of HDMI for everything, citing "that is works" among the reasons why. Will HDMI ever fulfill the promise it was sold on?"

Slashdot Article Is Self Referencing[->] 2008-04-09 03:01 QuantumG

Submitted by QuantumG on Wednesday April 09, @03:01AM
QuantumG writes "An article on Slashdot has been submitted which refers to itself. Scientists suggest such self-referential technology may soon be available commercially. The article is otherwise devoid of content and the link it contains might not work. Will future dupes of this article reference itself or a previous article? Only time will tell."

An anonymous reader writes "Slashdot will not be participating in the April Fools jokes this year due to a lawsuit that was settled out of court with undisclosed terms stemming from the 2007 April 1st stunts. The false stories were determined to be too egregious by a yet to be named individual. Slashdot's parent company SourceForge, Inc. found it wiser to settle out of court then a lengthy battle that was obviously going to span several months.

The ponies will be missed."

  Gibson sues Guitar Hero over patent[->] 2008-03-22 03:56 Izabael_DaJinn

Submitted by Izabael_DaJinn on Saturday March 22, @03:56AM
"Gibson Guitar sues MTV Networks and Harmonix, units of Viacom Inc., as well as Electronic Arts, relating to the wildly popular Guitar Hero video games." from The NY Times.

So Gibson Guitar wants a bigger piece of the $1 billion dollar Guitar Hero pie, so it has come up with what looks like the typical sort of patent nonsense you usually see here on /. But I'll let you guys tell me.

firefoxy writes "Mozilla has officially released Firefox 3 beta 3. This release includes new features, user interface enhancements, and theme improvements. Ars Technica has a review with screenshots. 'Firefox 3 is rapidly approaching completion and much of the work that remains to be done is primarily in the category of fit and finish. There will likely only be one more beta release after this one before Mozilla begins issuing final release candidates.'"

Idle: Saudi Arabia Bans Roses 2008-02-12 13:54

Posted by samzenpus on Tuesday February 12, @01:54PM
Saudi Arabia's religious police are seeing red over red roses. The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice has ordered the removal from stores any items colored scarlet, which is widely seen as symbolizing love. It is not unusual for the Saudi vice squad to become stricter before Valentine's Day, which it sees as encouraging relations between men and women outside of wedlock. Saudi officials said they are studying the effects of other things that fuel lust, like being awake, the vibrations of a heavy truck driving close by and the cute cashier at the gas station.
