Starcraft2... in installments.

Pay full price for the terran campaign, pay full price again for the zerg campaign, pay full price for the zerg, then pay full price again for the protoss.

Probably toss a lan extender campaign in there somewhere for full price (again) and you're paying $200+ for what originally was going to be a $50 game.

Urchin sends along a New Scientist writeup on Microsoft Research's nanoTouch prototype, a way of operating a touch screen from the rear (video here). The prototype will be presented at the Computer and Human Interaction conference in Boston, Mass., in April 2009. Coming soon to a wristwatch or neck pendant near you. "Electronic devices have been shrinking for years, but you might be forgiven for thinking that one that's only a centimeter across would be just too difficult to operate. Microsoft Research's new nanoTouch device suggests otherwise. Touch-screens are difficult to control with any precision — the fingers get in the way of the tiny targets you're trying to hit. But putting the touch interface on the rear of the screen instead gives users more precision because they can still see the whole screen as they interact with it. Microsoft Research has produced a prototype device called nanoTouch with a rear-mounted touch interface. User tests show it lets users accurately and reliably hit targets just 2 millimeters across on a screen under a centimeter across."

He is speaking of the Nintendo Fun Club Newsletter (a free precursor to the subscription magazine Nintendo Power) which was a very small (40-50 pages if I remember correctly)magazine that featured fan letters, short previews for upcoming games, and a few advertisements for varied nintendo games.

An anonymous reader writes "API Lead at Twitter, Alex Payne, writes today that the Internet was 'built wrong,' and continues to be accepted as an inferior system, due to a software engineering philosophy called Worse Is Better. 'We now know, for example, that IPv4 won't scale to the projected size of the future Internet. We know too that near-universal deployment of technologies with inadequate security and trust models, like SMTP, can mean millions if not billions lost to electronic crime, defensive measures, and reduced productivity,' says Payne, who calls for a 'content-centric approach to networking.' Payne doesn't mention, however, that his own system, Twitter, was built wrong and is consistently down."

Apparently it's only now that virtual worlds are really going to become a force to be reckoned with. 'Now experts predict the virtual world phenomenon is entering a second phase in which businesses will become shrewder about their involvement in such environments and look more carefully at the tangible benefits they can realize. Emerging technology specialist at IBM, Robert Smart, is confident virtual worlds will become more important to businesses in the coming years.'"

Microsoft has released a version of their windows media video 9 codec for uses outside of media player, such as encoding video in virtualdub.

I just read the article posting about Microsoft changing the Win2k EULA for service pack 4. I posted a response (clearly and impartially) to the first post, in which the poster claimed their board of directors were getting rid of all Microsoft desktops and replacing them with Linux and OSX. I posted back that without any listing of what company he was posting about, it was rather hard to believe, and gave my reasoning.

Akatsuki manga has some nice manga projects going.

J-comx does the translation to a personal favorite, Chrno Crusade. Also did most of the Azumanga Daioh manga translations long before the anime hit.
