IamBMETammy's Journal: Hello Everyone on Slashdot 12

Journal by IamBMETammy

Just thought I'd check in to see how everyone's doing.

Is it lonely here with most of the circle gone? Or do you keep busy with news articles and whatnot?

I still check in from time to time to see if anything interesting is going on with you folks, but just realized I haven't posted in ages so you get this... Not that exciting but a post all the same.

Hello Everyone on Slashdot

  • Good to see you're doing well.
  • good to hear from you again. I've been wondering what's happened to you and many of the others that have gone silent. How has everything been going?

    • Belated congratulations on the wedding. :-) You survived having to deal with all the crap surrounding weddings! That's an event in and of itself.

I'm stressing out lately since I'm trying to finish my med school application, but other than that life is good. I know you resisted the multiply migration but you can always read pages without joining the site. I don't think the comments will show up threaded unless you're logged in though...

Several people are restricting their posts to users in their (extended) network, so to read a lot of that stuff you do need to be a member. But really, there is no reason not to sign up - it isn't as if Multiply's TOS are any different to Slashdot's.

I haven't read them recently, but when the migration was happening it was pointed out that you don't own the content you post on Multiply. That's part of the reason I didn't migrate, and why I posted only the rare blog entry. The other reason is that when I did comment, multiply lost them.

You do own the content you post on Multiply. What the TOS states is that you give Multiply a licence to use your content, within the site - ie, you give them a licence to include your content in the web pages Multiply serves up - just the same as you give Slashdot a licence to use your content here. There's really no difference between Multiply's TOS and Slashdot's, or any other "community" or "social networking" site in that regard.

These are not exactly the same thing, and Multiply's actual TOS is the former, not the latter (as I recall). Meaning that their use of what you post is not restricted to the web pages that they serve up. I'm not comfortable with that, so I don't post there.

Slashdot does not have formal terms of service (or at least not that I can recall agreeing to), but in the

I repeat, Multiply's TOS is substantially no different to Slashdot's. Click the "Terms of Service" link at the bottom of this page for Slashdot's TOS.

Slashdot requires "each SourceForge Site user must: (1) personally provide true, accurate, current and complete information on the SourceForge Site's registration form (collectively, the "Registration Data") and (2) maintain and promptly update the Registration Data as necessary to keep it true, accurate, current and complete."

      • Thanks for the congratulations. The wedding was probably the most stressful time of my life. I am much glad that it is over now.

I try to check on multiply every now and then, but mostly it seems that I am not able to see entries because I am not a user. Plus I don't have a feed reader anymore, so mostly I get lazy and forgetful. Slashdot is much easier for me. Or at least it was working better for me when people were actually on it. ;-)

Perhaps I'll start looking at multiply again. For some re

        • My sister went to medical school with a BS in sociology, and had someone in her class that'd been a history major. Strange.

But as long as you take the prerequisite science classes, you can get in.

  • Glad you could swing by for a quick hi;-) Good luck on the med school apps, though I have no doubts they'll turn out just fine. ANyone who actually has a favorite type of E coli is destined to be a doctor;-)
  • The lower bandwidth has been a good thing for me. I've found some new journals to read, and I'm writing more (not here).

I've also been chosen to wield the flaming sword of moderation justice three times in three weeks, after a four year hiatus. :-)

Good luck with your medical school stuff, and have fun over on LiveJournal! Er, Multiply. :-)
