Earthquake Hunting in the Heart of Nuclear Country

Submitted by dusty
dusty writes "Researchers are putting fresh impetus on finding the underlying cause of earthquakes in the East Tennessee Seismic Zone as new Nuclear Regulatory Commission applicants come into the system wanting to build new nuclear plants. The 'Tennessee Valley' stretches from Virginia, Georgia, Alabama, and of course most of Tennessee, and seismically is the second most active region in the Eastern United States . The Tennessee Valley is also prime nuclear territory, as until recently seismicity studies have been few and far between. The problem with studying how and if large quakes can happen in the area is limited to extensive tree cover, large amounts of yearly precipitation that erodes surface features in relatively short geologic time frames.

The ETSZ is listed as a zone of moderate seismic risk , however the data for drawing such conclusions is scant, and based more on written and felt quakes through history. The most commonly cited mechanism is the reactivation of extremely ancient basement faults . The problem is no one really knows what has reactivated the faults, and just how many or how few large quakes have occurred over the last 5,000 or 10,000 years. Nuclear plants were sited here because the region is rich with cooling tower water from the many rivers, and was thought to be geologically stable. Several larger quakes have occurred over the last few years, including a 4.9 in Alabama, as well as innumerable smaller ones . As more nuclear plants for the region are proposed, it is clear that more knowledge is needed as to whether larger earthquakes have occurred in the recent past, and whether another large one might be building for the day when even more nuclear plants are sited here."

So a generation of acid heads, and stoners can record and preserve thousands of Grateful Dead concerts all why moderately crazed on mind altering drugs, while NASA spent hundreds of millions on the Apollo Program only to record over them due to a "tape shortage" ? What doesn't add up here? Maybe Nasa should put dead heads in charge of space exploration. At least that way things will be preserved correctly. Until that happens count me in as one of the fools that think the only way the real tapes were destroyed was if they were destroyed on purpose.

Come on guys...

Whatever happened to improvisational near real time performances in the public domain.. rotfl.

Well anyway if someone wants a recording of the bad storms that rolled through here about 3 hours ago with some guitar recorded live.. here it is.

Yeah, I hope succeeds until they start putting demo machines in stores with Ubuntu loaded that they know aren't working correctly and saying:

"Oh you are interested in Linux are you Well here try it. See how it doesn't work correctly? See? It doesn't have many features. See how slow it is? See how Microsoft office doesn't run on it?"

"Now look over here at Windows 7 folks. This system works and you never have to worry about anything!... yada yada"

Probably won't but still, wouldn't put it past them. For some reason snake oil salesman comes to mind. Color me jaded.

So reading this article raised a question in my mind about static electricity. We all hate getting shocked when we get in or out of our cars.

Why not try to harvest this energy by feeding the static electricity back into the batteries?

I recently bought a new Challenger SRT8 that has carbon fiber stripes, you know carbon fiber can conduct electricity, so on a hybrid car you could put the fiber stripes (maybe doped with something to even create better static electricity charges) in leading edges of the vehicle, and on the roof and hood, and trunk.

It may only produce a couple hundred volts or maybe if the carbon fiber stripes/patches were designed to produce more static charge.. even more,

What's a couple hundred volts here and there right? Well it can add up!

New form of Carbon predicted-> 1

Submitted by Dave Quantum
Dave Quantum writes "Amorphous carbon, graphite, diamond, fullerenes and now ... well, it doesn't have a name yet, but the new form of carbon modeled by Japanese scientists is only the second 3D carbon structure after diamond. The team is currently working on synthesising it, so maybe it'll get a name one day soon. I vote for 'Barry.' :-)"
