Halo 3 Criticized In Murder Conviction 839

oldwindways writes "An Ohio teen was found guilty of murdering his mother and shooting his father in the head after they took away his copy of Halo 3. One has to wonder if this is going to have any effect on the games industry. Clearly, the AP thought they could stir up something controversial by asking the IP owner for a statement: 'Microsoft, which owns the intellectual property for the game, declined to comment beyond a statement saying: "We are aware of the situation and it is a tragic case."' I suppose the good news is they did not accept his insanity plea, so no one can claim that Halo 3 drove him insane. Even so, I don't think anything good can come out of this for gamers." Unfortunately, it seems somebody can claim that the game was a contributing factor; the judge who presided over this case said he believes that the 17-year-old defendant "had no idea at the time he hatched this plot that if he killed his parents, they would be dead forever." GamePolitics has further details from the judge's statement. It doesn't help that the boy's lawyers used video game addiction as a defense.

+ - Warner Bros backs Blu-ray Disc Exclusively->

Lucas123 writes "After backing both high-def formats, Warner Bros has just announced it will be dropping HD DVD in May and putting its weight exclusively behind Blu-ray Disc, in what will no doubt be an enormous blow to Toshiba-backed HD DVD. The change of heart by Hollywood's biggest seller of DVDs apparently came after it decided the format war is confusing to consumers and a stumbling block for a potential multibillion-dollar industry."

+ - Facebook Widget Installs Zango Spyware ->

Submitted by BaCa
BaCa (666) writes "A malicious Facebook Widget actively spreading on the social networking site ultimately prompts users to install the infamous "Zango" adware/spyware. The tremendous success and lightning fast expansion of Facebook empowered the social networking giant with an impressive user base. Needless to say, in a digital world where web traffic equals money, such a user base attracts spammers, virus/spyware seeders, and other ethic-less online marketers like honey would attract flies."

+ - Open Letter to Netflix Management - No Mac Support->

drcomp writes "Hello /. Team,

Thanks for a great site which I read daily. I have composed an open letter to Netflix regarding their lack of support for any platform outside of Internet Explorer 6/7 for Windows. I detail their potential lost business, but more importantly, the effect on consumer choice that a company as large as Netflix can have on the community. I go one step further to express how lack of consumer choice keeps companies such as Microsoft producing inferior software, because they know that 'they can.'

Thanks for considering it — hopefully exposure on /. could bring this issue to light and get some things done. Letter is here.

+ - NASA Global Warming Data Shown to be Flawed->

ubermiester writes "The Daily Tech science blog reports on a recent correction made by NASA to it's global climate data. Apparently the algorithm NASA was using the crunch raw climate data suffered from a Y2K bug that skewed the numbers. The operators of climateaudit.org were forced to reverse engineer the algorithm after NASA's James Hansen (best known for his claims of White House censorship) refused to share it. NASA has since admitted to the error and republished the numbers. The changes result in a 1-2% downward correction in overall warming trends. 1934 also surpasses 1998 as the warmest year on record and 5 of the top 10 warmest years in the 20th century occur before WWII."
