Under The Hood of The Linux-Based Asus Eee PC->

MojoKid writes "The Asus Eee PC is now available for sale in the US as of 11/1, though you got a UK perspective here on /. a few weeks back. There is more than enough buzz about this new, low-cost, ultra-portal computer that ships with a custom KDE-built interface for Linux. Though the machine has been viewed by some as a response to the XO-1 laptop from OLPC, but it appears to be less toy-like in its design. This full evaluation shows the Eee PC is built on the Intel mobile Celeron and 910GML Express chipset. Power consumption was measured at a miserly 15 Watts idle and 18 Watts under load with battery life in excess of 3.5 hours. There is also an abundance of software pre-installed on the machine, like Open Office applications, Skype, Pigeon and even a web cam."

Linspire CNR Promises to Change Linux Forever->

showMONEY writes "OSWeekly.com's Matt Hartley discusses the impact of Linspire's new CNR is going to have on Linux. He writes, "We have been hearing about it for sometime now. But finally, after what feels like forever, a spark of life is being shown from within Linspire headquarters and even though there has been no official announcement just yet, word is that we will be seeing signs of life from the new CNR version here fairly soon. How soon? For Linspire and Freespire, in a matter of a few days to a week, I suspect."

Automatix Activly Dangerous to Ubuntu

exeme writes "Ubuntu developer Matthew Garrett has recently analysed famed Ubuntu illegal software installer Automatix and found it to be actively dangerous to Ubuntu desktop systems. In a detailed report which only took Garrett a couple of hours he found many serious, show-stopper bugs and concluded that Ubuntu could not officially support Automatix in its current state. Garrett also goes on to say that simple Debian packages could provide all of the functionality of Automatix without any of the problems it exhibits."

dbhost writes "Along with this morning's cup of coffee and log reviews, I discovered that the KDE team is moving forward with a long awaited beta release of KDE 4.0 beta release of KDE 4.0. The most interesting item I found in the notes is that the file manager in KDE is being separated from Konqueror into a component called Dolphin. Also, according to the announcement, konsole has been treated to a number of improvements such as split view, and history highlighting."

An anonymous reader writes "August 2, 2007 (The INTERNET). The KDE Community is happy to announce the immediate availability of the first Beta release for KDE 4.0. This release marks the beginning of the integration process which will bring the powerful new technologies included in the now frozen KDE 4 libraries to the applications. Almost two months after the foundations of KDE 4 have been laid with the first alpha, KDE enters the stage of a full freeze of the library interface. From now on, the applications will focus on integrating the new technology refined during the last months, and the library developers will try to fix all bugs found during this process. No new applications will enter the official KDE modules and usability and accessibility work is of course an ongoing process. In the following weeks KDE developers will be able to add features to their applications until the next beta is released and the application features will be frozen as well."
