So lets see... take a religious ceremony, give the government bureaucrats and thugs jurisdiction (so we completely INVALIDATE the contract by giving the government partnership into it with each spouse, rather than letting it be a private contract between the spouses, as it should be) and now the government becomes the sole arbiter of what is marriage? Except that it's not purely a religious ceremony. Spouses have a lot of legal rights and privileges under civil law, tax law, and even in some criminal law (spousal privilege in testimony comes to mind). If it were a purely religious institution, there'd be no reason for heterosexual couples to seek a state marriage license either, as there's no law against a man and a woman cohabitating or even raising a child.
