Submission + - Why are some cars only available outside of the US 1

schwit1 writes: Wired has a review of the new VW Diesel Scirocco that gets 44mpg, does 0 to 62 mph in 8.1 seconds and tops out at 138 mph.

The only problem is that it's not being sold in the states. This is not isolated. Jeep builds diesel versions of their Wranglers in the US but only sells them in the UK or Australia. Toyota has diesel version of their pickups that get sold everywhere but the US.

Is it a support issue, a safety issue or a conspiracy to prop up the oil companies and Detroit, and make us buy the 6000SUX?
